Chapter 11 - The Bloody Envelope in the Mailbox

The morning sun had barely begun to burn through the thick autumn mist hanging over Vance Manor when the black courier sedan idled silently at the iron gates.
Julian stood on the grand front steps, his coat unbuttoned, watching Vanessa’s private town car load her last piece of luggage into the trunk. The quiet that had settled over the estate after the trial felt unnatural, like the breathless stillness before a seismic shockwave. Vanessa turned to him on the gravel driveway, her wool scarf wrapped tightly around her throat, her face pale but composed.
"You don't have to keep checking on me, Julian," Vanessa said softly, her breath clouding in the freezing air. "The press has moved on to the next scandal. The court gave me my immunity. I just want to disappear into the Alps and pretend the name Vance never existed."
"You risked your neck to put Marcus away," Julian replied, his voice raspy from exhaustion. "A Vance trust fund will wire fifty thousand dollars to your Swiss account on the first of every month. It’s not charity, Vanessa. It’s what you earned by telling the truth."
She gave him a bittersweet, lingering look, then stepped toward the car. Before she could touch the door handle, the estate’s head of security, Henderson, came jogging across the cobblestones, his face stripped of color. He held a manila envelope sealed in transparent evidence plastic.
"Mr. Vance," Henderson panted, ignoring Vanessa’s presence entirely. "This just bypassed the outer security checkpoint. Someone dropped it into the private gate box thirty seconds ago. No vehicle registered on the perimeter infrared."
Julian’s brow furrowed. "Marcus is in federal isolation. His lawyers can’t send anything without clearance."
"It’s not from Marcus’s legal team, sir," Henderson said, extending the bag. "Look at the seal."
Stenciled across the brown paper in faded crimson wax was an emblem that made Julian’s heart hammer against his ribs: a double-headed serpent biting an hourglass. It was Clara’s family seal—the crest of the Sterling estate, an heirloom ring Clara had worn on her pinky finger every single day until the fiery car crash that supposedly took her life three years ago.
"Open it," Julian ordered, his voice dangerously low.
Henderson sliced the plastic with a tactical pocketknife and shook the contents into his gloved palm. Two objects hit the cold metal tray: a heavy platinum ring caked in dried, oxidized blood, and a micro-cassette tape wrapped in an ultrasound printout dated just two weeks ago.
Vanessa gasped, stepping backward until her spine hit the car door. "That’s... that’s Clara’s ring. Marcus told me he threw that into the Atlantic when they dragged her car out of the ravine!"
Julian snatched the cassette with shaking fingers. He strode into the library without another word, Henderson and Vanessa hurrying behind him. The room smelled of old leather and mahogany, a shrine to the life Julian had built with Clara before the world shattered. Julian slammed the tape into a vintage deck on his desk and hit play.
The tape hissed with mechanical static. Then came the steady, rhythmic sound of a heart monitor echoing in a sterile chamber.
Beneath the beeps, a woman’s hoarse, ragged voice whispered into the microphone:
*"Julian... they didn’t bury me. Marcus didn't act alone. He sold me to the Vault. If you don't find the basement in Zurich before the snow falls... they are going to take our third child."*
The recording cut abruptly to a flatline tone.
Julian stood frozen, his eyes wide, the blood roaring in his ears so violently he could barely hear Henderson’s phone vibrating frantically against the mahogany wood.

Henderson answered, listened for three seconds, and dropped his jaw. "Mr. Vance... that was ADX Florence. Marcus Vance was just found dead inside his solitary cell twenty minutes ago. His wrists were tied to the bars, and his tongue was surgically excised."
