Chapter 14 - The Whisper in the Dark

Back at the manor, the grandfather clock in the main hall struck two in the morning.
Julian sat in his study, the photographs of the empty casket spread across the mahogany desk like tarot cards of ruin. The burner phone was plugged into a decryption laptop, Henderson’s tech specialist furiously running trace algorithms on the audio signal.
A small creak of the floorboards broke the silence.
Julian looked up. Leo stood in the doorway, clutching his faded blue teddy bear, his bare feet blue from the drafts of the old house. His large, solemn eyes were fixed on the photograph of the mannequin lying in the dirt.
"Leo," Julian said, his voice softening instantly as he moved across the room to scoop the seven-year-old boy into his arms. "Buddy, what are you doing awake? Henderson told you to stay in the safe room."
Leo buried his face into Julian’s neck, trembling violently. "The phone woke me up, Dad."
Julian froze. "What phone, Leo? The library is soundproofed."
"The phone in the wall," Leo whispered, pointing his small finger toward the corner of the room, behind the floor-to-ceiling bookshelf. "Mommy’s phone. It talks to me when you leave."
Julian’s breath hitched. He set Leo down on the leather sofa and motioned for Henderson to draw his sidearm. Walking over to the corner Leo had indicated, Julian grabbed the edge of the heavy oak shelf and hauled it backward. The antique wood screeched against the parquet floor.
Hidden in the drywall behind the molding was a small, square recess—a secret compartment Clara had used as a child when the house belonged to her grandparents.
Inside sat a baby monitor unit, its green LED light blinking steadily.
Julian pulled it out. The monitor was not broadcasting—it was *receiving*. A low, rhythmic lullaby was playing from the tiny speaker. It was the exact melody Clara used to sing to Leo before bed: an old French song about the sea.
Julian brought the speaker to his ear. Beneath the lullaby, he heard the faint sound of weeping.
"Clara?" Julian breathed into the unit.
The lullaby stopped instantly.
A ragged intake of breath sounded on the other end. *"Julian... they're taking the girl tonight. They’re taking our daughter. They know you dug up the grave. Don't trust the lawyers. Don't trust—"*
A sudden scuffle erupted over the receiver. The sound of shattered glass and a heavy thud, followed by a harsh, male voice speaking German: *"Der Raum ist kompromittiert. Liquidiert das Subjekt."* (The room is compromised. Liquidate the subject.)

A gunshot tore through the tiny speaker, followed by dead, static air.
