Chapter 18 - The False Cradle

Before Julian could process her words, the incubator’s internal digital display shifted from infant vital monitors to a red digital countdown:
*00:15... 00:14... 00:13...*
The crying sound wasn't coming from the baby’s mouth—it was emitting from a micro-speaker concealed beneath the synthetic blanket. The infant in the cradle was another horrifying silicone doll, wired directly to a block of military-grade C4 explosive packed into the mattress.
"Henderson! Out!" Julian roared, unbuckling Clara’s leather restraints with frantic, tearing motions.
Henderson sprinted into the room, assessed the countdown in half a second, and grabbed Clara’s legs while Julian hooked his arms beneath her shoulders. They hauled her off the operating table just as the timer hit *00:05*.
Julian dove backward through the heavy blast door, dragging Clara into the reinforced hallway, using his own body as a shield over her fragile frame.
*BOOM!*
The concussive blast blew the blast door off its hinges, sending a wall of fire, shattered glass, and twisted metal roaring over their heads. The air was sucked from Julian’s lungs as the ceiling collapsed in a shower of concrete dust and falling tiles.
Coughing through the thick, toxic smoke, Julian pushed the rubble off his back. Clara was unconscious in his arms, her pulse faint but steady. Henderson lay five feet away, clutching a bleeding shrapnel wound on his forearm, but already back on his feet with his sidearm drawn.
"They're collapsing the facility!" Henderson yelled over the screech of structural alarms. "The charges are wired through the foundation pillars! We have three minutes before the whole mountain caves in!"
Julian scooped Clara into his arms. She weighed almost nothing, her body starved and drained by months of clinical imprisonment. He ran through the crumbling corridor, avoiding falling support beams and blazing electrical conduits.
They burst out through a subterranean loading dock onto the snowy mountain ledge just as the lower level of the clinic collapsed behind them with an earth-shattering roar, an avalanche of rock and snow burying the facility forever.
A waiting medical chopper—arranged by Henderson’s extraction team—descended through the blizzard, its landing skids touching the ice just feet from the ledge.
Julian carried Clara into the cabin, strapping her into the medical gurney as the flight medic immediately inserted an IV line into her arm.
Clara stirred, her eyes rolling beneath her eyelids as the oxygen mask was placed over her face. She reached out, grabbing Julian’s collar, pulling him down to her lips.

"They have Leo..." she whimpered, her breath fogging the clear plastic mask. "The woman who calls herself my mother... she has him in New York."
