Chapter 20 - The House of Glass

Midnight struck over the Hudson Valley as Julian’s lone black SUV rolled slowly past the open iron gates of Vance Manor.

The sprawling estate was illuminated from within, every chandelier, sconce, and lamp blazing with blinding light, making the gothic manor look like a colossal glass lantern set against the pitch-black forest.

Julian stepped out of the vehicle. He carried no weapons in his hands, but his trench coat concealed a Glock 19 tucked into his small of the back, and a micro-transmitter sewn into the lining of his collar, broadcasting his location to federal tactical assault teams staged three miles south.

He walked up the front steps, the front double doors swinging open on their heavy brass hinges without a sound.

The air inside the house smelled of Clara’s favorite lilies, mixed with the sharp, metallic tang of fresh blood.

Julian stepped into the grand marble foyer.

Lying at the foot of the twin curved staircases was Henderson’s private security detail—six elite bodyguards, all stripped of their gear, unconscious and zip-tied together against the banister.

In the center of the grand parlor, sitting beneath the massive crystal chandelier, was an elderly woman with silver hair pulled into an immaculate chignon. She wore a tailored black velvet suit, sipping tea from a delicate porcelain cup.

Beside her, sitting quietly on a silk settee, was Leo.

And in a silver antique bassinet resting at Evelyn Sterling’s feet lay a tiny infant wrapped in Clara’s bridal veil.

"Welcome home, Julian," Evelyn said, setting her cup down with a soft *clink* that sounded like a gunshot in the silent room.

"Leo, come here," Julian said calmly, his eyes locked on the old woman, refusing to show the terror clawing at his chest.

Leo looked at Julian with wide, confused eyes, but didn't move. Julian noticed with mounting horror that a thin, almost invisible filament of monofilament wire was looped around Leo’s wrist, leading directly into Evelyn’s manicured fist, which rested lightly on the arm of the chair.

"Don't move, Leo," Evelyn commanded gently. "Daddy knows the rules of the house."

She looked up at Julian, a smile touching her blood-red lips.

"You brought Clara back, didn't you?" Evelyn murmured. "She’s waiting in the ambulance at the perimeter. How sweet. How poetically futile."

"It's over, Evelyn," Julian said, his hand slowly drifting toward the small of his back. "The FBI has the ledgers. Marcus’s safe deposit box in Manhattan was seized two hours ago. Every offshore front company for Caduceus has been frozen. You have nowhere to run."

Evelyn laughed, a dry, rattling sound that raised the hair on Julian’s arms.

"Run? Why would I run, Julian? This house is built on Sterling land. And the game hasn't even begun."

She raised her left hand, revealing a small, black remote detonator between her fingers.

"You spent so much time looking for Clara’s captors," Evelyn whispered, her eyes gleaming with absolute madness, "that you never stopped to ask why Clara drove her car into that ravine three years ago in the first place."

Julian froze, his fingers brushing the grip of his pistol. "What are you talking about?"

Evelyn pointed a long, bony finger toward the top of the grand staircase.

A shadow moved along the second-floor mezzanine. The rhythmic, dragging sound of bare feet against hardwood drifted down through the grand hall.

Julian turned his gaze upward, his breath hitching in his throat.

Emerging from the shadows of the upper balcony was a woman holding a silenced automatic rifle. She looked down at Julian with eyes that were cold, lucid, and filled with deep, calculating hatred.

Her face was identical to the woman dying in the ambulance outside.

"Did you really think the woman you rescued in Zurich was Clara, Julian?" the woman on the balcony spoke, her voice sending a shockwave of ice through Julian’s veins. "She was just my spare. Marcus wasn't the monster who orchestrated the swap, my love... *I was.*"
