Chapter 8 - The Raid at Blackwood Manor

The sub-basement of Blackwood Manor had been converted into a grotesque, sterile nightmare.

Where historic wine racks once stood, stainless steel surgical partitions now divided the cold stone cellar into an improvised operating theater. Fluorescent surgical lamps cast a harsh, blue glare over trays of scalpels, oxygen tanks, and intravenous drips. The air was thick with the smell of iodine, rubbing alcohol, and the metallic tang of fresh blood.

On an adjustable surgical table in the center of the room lay Chloe.

She looked barely twenty years old, her frail, pale frame ravaged by advanced lupus, her dark hair plastered to her skull with sweat. Her swollen, pregnant belly rose high and tight against a paper medical gown. Her wrists were strapped to the armrests with leather restraints, her fingers clawing at the buckles as contractions tore through her body.

Hovering over her was a man in full surgical scrubs, holding a syringe filled with an amber chemical compound—an emergency cocktail designed to force rapid cervical dilation.

On the far side of the room, standing calmly beside an empty transport incubator, was Marcus Vance.

He looked immaculately tailored despite the grim subterranean setting, wearing a cashmere overcoat, his leather gloves spotless. In his hand, he held an encrypted satellite tablet displaying the real-time financial markets of Tokyo and London, awaiting the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange.

"Step away from the table," Julian’s voice sliced through the hum of the medical machinery like an executioner’s axe.

Marcus didn't flinch. He slowly raised his eyes, a faint, condescending smile curling his thin lips. "Julian. You always were melodramatic. Even in the Navy. Always running toward the gunfire instead of managing the balance sheet."

Julian kept his weapon trained dead-center on Marcus’s forehead. Five yards separated the two brothers. Behind Julian, Vanessa came stumbling down the stairs, dropping to her knees beside the surgical table, frantically unbuckling the leather straps binding her sister's wrists.

"Chloe! Chloe, I’m here! I’m here, baby, look at me!" Vanessa wept, kissing her sister’s feverish forehead.

"V-Vanessa..." Chloe gasped, her eyes fluttering open, clouded with narcotics and pain. "They... they said they were going to put the baby in a box... they said you were dead..."

"Step away from my daughter, Marcus," Julian whispered, his finger tightening incrementally on the trigger of the .45. "Tell your doctor to drop the syringe, or his brain matter will be all over that back wall."

The rogue doctor looked at Julian's weapon, swallowed hard, and dropped the syringe to the concrete floor, where the glass shattered, spilling the amber liquid into the cracks. The doctor backed slowly away, raising his trembling hands.

Marcus chuckled softly, closing the leather cover of his tablet. "Shoot me, Julian. Go ahead. Pull the trigger."

"You think I won't?"

"I know you won't," Marcus said, taking a slow step toward the edge of the surgical table, placing his gloved hand casually on the monitor displaying the unborn child's vital signs. "Because you are a slave to your moral code. If you kill me here, you are an armed intruder who committed an extrajudicial homicide in an illegal clinic. My corporate legal team will tie this estate to an unauthorized private medical venture operated solely by Vanessa. They will claim you murdered your brother in a fit of rage after discovering your wife's infidelity."

Marcus leaned forward, his eyes dark with absolute, sociopathic malice.

"Meanwhile, the Vance Global Logistics board convenes in exactly three hours. With me dead and you under arrest for murder, the estate trustee takes control. And guess who drafted the contingency clauses of that trust, Julian? Arthur Pendelton has been on my payroll since the day Clara drove her Mercedes off Route 9."

Julian’s soul turned to stone.

*Arthur.*

The trusted family lawyer. The man who had held Leo’s hand and led him down to the wine cellar vault back at the estate.

"You left your son with Arthur, didn't you?" Marcus whispered, his smile widening into a grotesque, triumphant sneer. "Arthur doesn't have Leo in a safe room, Julian. Arthur is currently driving Leo to an airstrip in Teterboro, New Jersey. A private Gulfstream is waiting on the tarmac, fueled for a non-extradition sanctuary in Dubai."

Marcus tapped the side of his tablet. "You sign the corporate transfer right now on this screen, brother. You hand over the twenty-six percent voting bloc, you let my doctor extract that infant so I can hold her in a private ward under my legal guardianship as the sole surviving corporate heir... or Leo never lands in Dubai. He simply vanishes over the Atlantic Ocean."

A low, guttural contraction tore from Chloe’s throat—a scream of pure agony as the monitor's heart rate spiked violently into the red zone: *180... 190... 200 beats per minute.*

"Julian!" Vanessa screamed, holding her sister down as Chloe convulsed. "The baby is in distress! The cord is wrapped—she's suffocating! She needs a Caesarean right now or they're both going to die!"

Julian looked at his brother.

He looked at the sneering, aristocratic monster who had murdered his wife, enslaved these two sisters, stolen his daughter’s life, and now held his seven-year-old son over the abyss of an ocean grave.

Julian lowered his gun.

Marcus’s smile became victorious. "A sensible decision, Julian. Pick up the stylus on the table. Sign the proxy."

Julian took a slow step forward. He reached out with his right hand, his fingers touching the digital stylus resting on the stainless steel tray beside the scalpel.

Then, Julian looked Marcus dead in the eyes and whispered:

May you like

"Leo gave me something before I left."
