Chapter 1 - Blood and Crystal

The grand dining room of the Sterling Manor was an altar of polished mahogany, cut crystal, and suffocating hypocrisy. Beneath the colossal Austrian chandelier that hung like an icicle fortress from the hand-plastered ceiling, twenty of the city’s most ruthless socialites sat in tailored tuxedos and couture gowns. The air smelled of vintage Bordeaux, roasted truffles, and the unspoken venom of an empire built on ruined lives.
At the head of the table sat Victoria Sterling. At sixty-one, the matriarch looked carved from dry bone and diamonds. Her lips, painted the color of arterial blood, rarely curved into an authentic smile; they only twisted into predatory smirks.
And at the center of Victoria’s crosshairs tonight was Elena.
Elena was seven months pregnant with the first direct heir to the multi-billion-dollar Sterling fortune. She sat rigidly in her high-backed chair, wearing a modest emerald gown that draped over her swollen stomach. Her dark hair was styled into an elegant, glossy chignon. But her hands, resting beneath the linen tablecloth, trembled continuously. For three years, Elena had endured Victoria’s subtle barbs, the psychological cold wars, and the casual cruelty reserved for an "outsider" who had grown up in an orphanage rather than a gated estate.
Tonight, however, Victoria was not interested in subtlety.
"Tell me, Elena," Victoria’s voice sliced through the hum of classical music playing softly from the corner speakers. She set her gold-rimmed wine glass down with a sharp *clink* that commanded instant silence. "Does the child kicking inside you carry even an ounce of pedigree, or will my son’s bloodline be forever diluted by the gutters of Northside?"
A collective intake of breath rippled across the table. Guests glanced down at their caviar; others smirked into their crystal flutes.
Elena kept her chin level, swallowing the lump of lead in her throat. "Julian loves this child, Victoria. And Julian chose me. That should be pedigree enough."
The response was quiet, dignified, and to Victoria Sterling, it was high treason.
Victoria’s face darkened, the aristocratic mask slipping to reveal naked savagery. She rose slowly from her chair. The room fell into absolute, suffocating silence. Footmen stood frozen against the wood-paneled walls.
Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. She instinctively pressed a palm against her rounded belly, where her baby stirred restlessly. "Victoria, please..."
Victoria glided behind Elena’s chair like a ghost. Before Elena could turn, before anyone could breathe, Victoria’s bony, ring-encrusted fingers dug violently into the base of Elena’s skull.
"Ah!" Elena cried out as Victoria grabbed a thick fistful of her dark hair and yanked backward with terrifying, feral force.
Elena’s neck snapped back over the edge of the mahogany chair. The pain was searing, white-hot, ripping through her scalp. The room gasped in collective horror, yet not one billionaire, not one socialite, not one servant moved a muscle. Power paralyzed them all.
"You insolent, penniless leech!" Victoria hissed, her voice vibrating with venom right into Elena's ear. "You think carrying a Sterling child makes you immune? You are nothing! You are a stray dog Julian brought home from the rain!"
"Stop! Please, my baby!" Elena screamed, tears spilling over her flushed cheeks as she tried desperately to rise, her hands clawing at Victoria's wrists to relieve the agonizing tension on her neck.
Victoria gave one final, brutal wrench.
A sickening, fibrous tearing sound echoed above the dining table. Elena screamed as she stumbled out of the chair, crashing to the hardwood floor, barely managing to twist her body to protect her stomach.
Victoria stood tall, panting slightly. In her manicured hand, she held a thick, bloody clump of Elena’s dark hair, ripped completely out from the roots.
Instead of panic, instead of horror, a grotesque, triumphant laugh broke from Victoria’s throat. She held the torn hair high in the air like a hunting trophy for the stunned guests to see.
"Look at her!" Victoria sneered, stepping over Elena’s trembling form. "Look at the woman Julian threw his life away for!"
With a vicious flick of her wrist, Victoria hurled the bloody clump of hair straight into Elena’s face. The strands brushed against Elena’s tear-stained cheek before settling onto the cold floor. Elena lay on her side, shaking violently, curling her entire body into a protective shield around her seven-month belly.
"Get up," Victoria commanded coldly. "Pick up your garbage and get out of my sight before I have security throw you onto the street where you belong."
Suddenly, the heavy double oak doors of the dining hall burst open with a resounding boom.
"Elena!"
Julian Sterling sprinted into the room. His tuxedo jacket was unbuttoned, his tie loose, having rushed straight from an emergency board meeting across town. The moment his hazel eyes landed on the horrific scene—his heavily pregnant wife weeping on the floor, clutching her belly, surrounded by torn hair and blood—his face drained of all color.
Then, his eyes ignited with a fury so profound it terrified the guests who knew Julian only as a polished, diplomatic businessman.
"Elena! Oh God, Elena!" Julian dropped to his knees, wrapping his muscular arms around his wife. "Are you hurt? Look at me, sweetheart, did it hit your stomach?"
"Julian... Julian, the baby... my head hurts so much..." Elena sobbed, burying her face into his chest, her hands clutching his lapels like a lifeline.
Julian saw the raw, bleeding patch on her scalp. He saw the clump of hair lying inches away. He slowly stood up, turning toward the woman who gave him life.
"Mother," Julian’s voice was barely a whisper, but it carried the chilling weight of an executioner’s axe. "What did you do?"
Victoria, completely unbothered, lifted her chin. Before Julian could step forward, she crossed the distance in two sharp strides and struck him across the face.
*SLAP!*
The sharp crack echoed off the vaulted ceiling. Julian’s head snapped to the side.
"You dare question me in front of our guests?" Victoria barked, her eyes wild with aristocratic arrogance. "You brought this gutter trash into my home! You allowed her to disrespect the Sterling name! Control your woman, Julian, or I will write you out of the will tonight!"
Every guest held their breath, waiting for Julian to fold. Victoria had controlled him his entire life. She controlled the trusts, the real estate, the board, the politicians. Julian had always been the dutiful son, maintaining peace for the sake of the family empire.
Julian slowly turned his head back. He did not touch his stinging, reddened cheek. His expression was not one of shock, nor defeat. It was empty. An abyss of absolute, unadulterated resolve.
Then, Julian did something that made every single guest freeze in disbelief.
He reached into his inner tuxedo pocket, pulled out his phone, and dialed three digits on speakerphone.
"911, what is your emergency?" the operator’s voice boomed through the silent room.
"My name is Julian Sterling," he spoke into the phone, his eyes locked dead into his mother’s suddenly widening pupils. "I am reporting a violent assault and attempted murder of an unborn child at Sterling Manor. The perpetrator is Victoria Sterling. Send an ambulance and the tactical police unit immediately. She is armed, unstable, and dangerous."
Victoria’s jaw dropped. "Julian! Have you lost your mind?!"
Julian hung up, knelt back down beside Elena, and lifted her into his arms with gentle, protective strength. He looked around the table at the frozen billionaires.
"And for those of you sitting there," Julian whispered, his gaze sweeping the room like a scythe, "dinner is over. Tomorrow morning, your complicity goes public."
No one moved. But in the far corner of the table, seated behind a grand silver centerpiece, a young woman in an emerald veil discreetly tapped the screen of her phone, stopping a high-definition 4K video recording. She looked down at the footage—every scream, every tear, every word of Victoria's savagery crystal clear.

A sinister, quiet smile spread across the woman's lips. Victoria Sterling was finally going to burn.
