Chapter 3 - Whispers Behind Closed Doors

The sterile, antiseptic smell of the private VIP wing at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital was a stark contrast to the perfumed decay of Sterling Manor.
Elena lay propped up against crisp white pillows, an IV drip connected to the back of her left hand. A neat, sterile bandage covered the crown of her head, hiding the raw patch where her hair had been torn away. The monitor beside her bed emitted a steady, reassuring beep, tracking both her vitals and the continuous heartbeat of their unborn son.
Julian sat in an armchair dragged close to the mattress, his head resting against Elena’s hip, his fingers intertwined with hers. He had not washed his face; a faint smear of his wife’s blood remained dried on his starched white cuff.
"Julian," Elena spoke softly, her voice still rough from crying. "You need to change your shirt."
Julian lifted his head, his eyes red-rimmed with exhaustion and guilt. "I don't care about the shirt, Elena. I care about you. I care about our son."
Elena gently caressed his cheek, where the faint red imprint of Victoria’s slap was beginning to bruise. "You stood up to her. In front of all those people. Julian... she will never forgive you for that. She will destroy you."
"Let her try," Julian whispered fiercely, pressing his lips against Elena’s knuckles. "I should have done it two years ago. I should have taken you and left the country the moment she made that first veiled threat. I thought... I foolishly thought if I played the loyal executive, if I expanded the family trust, she would eventually see your worth. I thought money and legacy could protect us. But she’s sick, Elena. She is completely consumed by malice."
A gentle knock sounded at the door. Dr. Elizabeth Chen, the hospital’s chief of obstetrics and a longtime trusted friend of Julian’s late father, walked into the room carrying a medical tablet. Her expression was solemn.
"How are we feeling, Elena?" Dr. Chen asked warmly, stepping to the bedside and checking the monitors.
"The headache is constant, Dr. Chen," Elena admitted quietly. "And my abdomen feels tight."
"That tightness is uterine contractions brought on by extreme acute stress," Dr. Chen explained, pulling up Elena's ultrasound scans on the screen. "The good news is that the placenta remains intact. There is no internal hemorrhaging, and the baby's oxygen levels are normal. However, your cortisol levels are off the charts. If you experience another emotional shock of this magnitude, you risk going into premature labor. At thirty weeks, that poses serious pulmonary risks for the infant."
Julian’s jaw tightened. "What do we need to do, Elizabeth?"
"Bed rest. Absolute seclusion from stress," Dr. Chen said firmly, looking directly at Julian. "No press. No family drama. And most importantly, no Victoria. Julian, I’ve seen the preliminary police report. If that woman comes within a hundred yards of this room, I will have hospital security lock down the entire wing."
"She’s currently sitting in a holding cell at the central precinct," Julian replied darkly. "Her high-powered attorneys are working to bail her out as we speak, but I've already filed for an emergency temporary restraining order."
"Good," Dr. Chen patted Elena’s foot over the blanket. "Get some sleep, Elena. The mild sedative in your IV will help your body relax. Let Julian handle the wolves."
As Dr. Chen exited the room, Julian’s phone began vibrating violently on the bedside table. The screen lit up with the name: *Arthur Pendelton – Chief Legal Counsel, Sterling Enterprises.*
Julian hesitated, then squeezed Elena’s hand. "I need to take this. I’ll be right outside the door."
"Don't let them intimidate you," Elena whispered, her heavy eyelids already succumbing to the medication. "We have each other. We don't need their billions."
Julian kissed her temple gently. "We have everything we need right here."
Julian stepped into the brightly lit, deserted hallway and swiped to answer. "Talk to me, Arthur."
"Julian, thank God you answered," Pendelton’s voice was frantic, sounding breathless. "The precinct just processed your mother’s bail. The bail was set at five hundred thousand dollars, which we paid immediately. She’s already on her way back to the penthouse."
"I expected as much," Julian said coldly. "Did you draft the restraining order?"
There was a long, uncomfortable silence on the other end of the line.
"Julian... you need to listen to me very carefully," Pendelton whispered, his voice trembling with an emotion Julian had never heard from the veteran attorney: genuine fear. "Your mother isn't just angry. She’s enacting the scorched-earth protocol. She just convened an emergency virtual board meeting for seven o'clock tomorrow morning."
"She can't remove me as CEO without a thirty-day notice," Julian countered sharply.
"She’s not just removing you, Julian," Pendelton said gravely. "She invoked the Morality and Lineage Clause in your grandfather’s original trust indenture. She is claiming that your marriage to Elena was fraudulent, that the child is not a legitimate Sterling heir, and she is moving to seize your personal bank accounts, your equity, and freeze every asset tied to the Sterling foundation."
Julian felt a cold chill run down his spine. "She’s questioning the paternity of her own grandchild? That’s absurd. A simple DNA test will annihilate that claim."
"It’s not about the truth, Julian! It’s about the process!" Pendelton urged. "Under that clause, the moment paternity is formally contested by the matriarch, all disbursements are legally frozen for up to twelve months pending judicial review. She wants to starve you out. She knows Elena’s medical care and the legal fees will drown you without your executive salary. She wants you crawling back on your knees, begging for scraps, while Elena is forced out of the country."
Julian leaned his back against the sterile wall, closing his eyes. His mother wasn't just a tyrant; she was a master of legal suffocation.
"Arthur," Julian asked quietly, "is there any way around the Lineage Clause?"
"Only one," Arthur replied cautiously. "If you can prove that Victoria Sterling herself is legally unfit to hold the title of Matriarch Trustee due to gross criminal misconduct or moral turpitude. But to do that, you don't just need a domestic assault charge that high-priced lawyers can reduce to a misdemeanor. You need undeniable, public, catastrophic proof of cruelty that the board cannot ignore."
Just then, Julian’s screen beeped with an incoming message from an unknown encrypted number.
Julian pulled the phone from his ear and opened the text. It contained a single, low-resolution video thumbnail and a brief message:
*“I have the full 4K footage of what she did to Elena. I also have the audio of what she whispered to Mayor Hayes right before she attacked your wife. Meet me at the diner across the hospital in ten minutes. Come alone. — S.”*

Julian stared at the screen, his heart hammering against his ribs. The battle for the Sterling dynasty had officially begun.
