Chapter 5 - The War for the Sterling Dynasty

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the financial world was in a state of absolute shock.
*THE WALL STREET CHRONICLE* ran a blazing headline across its digital front page: **"INTERNAL CIVIL WAR AT STERLING ENTERPRISES: CEO JULIAN STERLING ARRESTS OWN MOTHER; MATRIARCH CONVENES EMERGENCY BOARD TO VOID HEIR’S TRUST."**
Victoria Sterling sat at the head of the conference table on the 50th floor of Sterling Tower. She was dressed in an immaculate charcoal-gray Chanel suit, her face expertly powdered to conceal any lingering trace of her night in a holding cell. Two of the city’s most ruthless criminal defense attorneys sat flanking her, their briefcases open, papers strewn across the glass table.
Across from her sat the seven senior board members of Sterling Enterprises—men and women whose net worths were tied directly to Victoria’s ruthless management. The atmosphere was thick with tension.
"The police report is irrelevant," Victoria stated, her voice as smooth and cold as polished marble. She gestured dismissively with an emerald-ringed hand. "My son has succumbed to a temporary manic episode orchestrated by an opportunist who married into this family under false pretenses. The charges will be dropped by noon."
"Victoria," spoke Marcus Green, the oldest board member and the company’s chief institutional investor. "The video of you striking Julian has already leaked to local tabloids. Julian has filed an emergency restraining order. The public relations fallout is devastating. Our stock dropped four percent at the opening bell."
"Stock prices fluctuate, Marcus," Victoria snapped back coldly. "What does not fluctuate is my control over this board. Julian has violated his fiduciary duty by weaponizing law enforcement against the majority shareholder. Therefore, pursuant to Section 14 of the corporate charter, I move to immediately strip Julian Sterling of his title as Chief Executive Officer and suspend all executive compensation."
The board members exchanged uneasy glances.
"And who will manage the pending European acquisition?" Marcus asked carefully.
"I will resume the role of Executive Chairman and interim CEO," Victoria declared, her eyes gleaming with triumph. "Furthermore, tonight’s Annual Charity Gala will proceed exactly as planned at the Grand Plaza Hotel. I will personally address the press, clarify this unfortunate 'family misunderstanding,' and introduce the new executive direction of Sterling Enterprises. If Julian wishes to apologize and sign the voluntary severance agreement, he may attend. If not, security will bar him from the premises."
Victoria stood up, signaling the end of the meeting. "Gentlemen, the Sterling empire does not bend for sentimental fools. Vote accordingly."
Five minutes later, the board voted 6 to 1 to approve Julian’s suspension. Victoria exited the boardroom with an icy smile plastered on her lips. She had won. She had always won.
Meanwhile, back at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, the atmosphere in Elena’s VIP suite was one of focused, surgical preparation.
Elena was out of bed, seated in a comfortable armchair near the window. The color had returned to her face. Though a subtle bandage remained concealed beneath her hair, which had been restyled by a trusted stylist into an intricate, low braided updo, her eyes were no longer those of a terrified victim. They were sharp, focused, and burning with resolve.
Sophia was there, her laptop connected to the room’s high-speed network, cross-referencing genetic data with old public records.
"It’s confirmed, Elena," Sophia said softly, turning the screen toward her. "The genetic markers from your prenatal screening perfectly match the Vance lineage. You are Richard Vance’s biological daughter. You are my cousin."
Elena looked at the black-and-white photograph of Richard Vance on the screen—a man with her exact eyes, her exact smile, holding a toddler on the steps of an old brownstone. Tears pricked her eyes, but she did not let them fall.
"All my life," Elena murmured, her voice steady, "I thought my parents abandoned me because I was unwanted. I spent twenty years wondering why I was left alone in this world. And all along... she murdered him. She hunted my mother into an early grave."
Julian stepped up behind Elena, resting his hands gently on her shoulders. "You don't have to face her tonight, Elena. You don't have to step into that room. Elizabeth said you need rest. Sophia and I can take this evidence straight to the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
Elena turned her head and looked up at her husband, reaching up to cover his hand with her own.
"No, Julian," Elena said, her voice filled with a quiet, undeniable power that made Julian’s heart swell with pride. "She humiliated me in front of the people she considers her kingdom. She tore my hair out because she thought I was weak. She tried to erase my father, and she tried to kill our child."
Elena slowly rose from the chair, smoothing down the fabric of her maternity dress.

"Tonight, Victoria Sterling is throwing a party to celebrate her victory," Elena continued, her eyes fixed on the city skyline outside the window. "We are going to attend. And I am going to look her in the eyes when she loses everything."
