Chapter 8 - The Unmasking

The high-definition video began playing with deafening, pristine audio that reverberated off every gilded wall of the Grand Plaza ballroom.

On the sixty-foot screen, the terrifying events of the previous night were laid bare in horrifying, unedited clarity. The entire high-society audience watched in frozen horror as Victoria Sterling’s face appeared on screen, twisted in sadistic fury.

*"You insolent, penniless leech!"* Victoria’s voice roared from the state-of-the-art sound system. *"You think carrying a Sterling child makes you immune? You are nothing! You are a stray dog Julian brought home from the rain!"*

The ballroom gasped collectively as the footage showed Victoria grabbing Elena by the hair, violently ripping her backward, and tearing out a bloody clump of hair while Elena screamed in agony, desperately shielding her pregnant stomach. The sound of the tear—that sickening, fibrous rip—echoed through the silent hall like a gunshot.

Several women in the front row buried their faces in their hands, horrified. Prominent city officials exchanged panicked, nauseated glances.

On stage, Victoria stood paralyzed, her mouth slightly open, the blood completely drained from her face. "Turn it off! Cut the power! Cut the feed!" she screamed toward the technicians, but the technicians had already been replaced by federal agents.

The video did not stop. It cut seamlessly to the conservatory footage recorded twenty minutes prior to the assault. Victoria’s cold, calculating voice filled the room as she spoke on the phone:

*"I don't care about the ethics, Dr. Lawson. The amniotic fluid proved what I feared. She is Richard Vance's daughter. If Julian finds out, the trust belongs to her. I need that girl out of this city, or that child will never take a breath outside of an incubator. Do whatever it takes to terminate her position in this family."*

The words hung in the air like poison.

The entire ballroom erupted into an uproar of absolute disbelief and disgust. Billionaires, judges, and foreign dignitaries stared up at Victoria on stage as if she were a venomous snake uncoiling in their midst. Mayor Hayes immediately pushed his chair back and hurried toward the emergency exit, refusing to even look at the woman he had called an ally an hour ago.

Elena took a slow, deliberate step forward, ascending the stairs to the stage. Julian walked beside her, his protective arm never leaving the small of her back.

Elena stopped three feet away from Victoria. The two women stood face to face beneath the blinding spotlights.

"You called me a stray dog, Victoria," Elena spoke directly into the podium microphone, her voice steady, melodic, and resonant with moral authority. "You thought because I had no family, no fortune, and no memory of my past, that you could crush me under your heels. You thought you could erase my father twice."

Elena reached up to her neck, unhooking the simple vintage silver locket. She popped the tiny latch open, revealing an old, faded portrait of Richard Vance and a four-year-old girl with dark hair and bright hazel eyes.

"My name is Elena Vance Sterling," Elena declared to the entire room, her eyes burning into Victoria's trembling, terror-stricken face. "I am the daughter of Richard Vance, the true co-founder of Sterling-Vance BioTech. And I am here to reclaim what you stole from my family twenty-four years ago."

"Lies... all lies!" Victoria stammered, her voice cracking as she took an involuntary step backward, knocking over the podium’s crystal water glass. The glass shattered on the stage floor, water soaking into the bottom of her velvet gown. "You are an impostor! Julian, she is manipulating you! Arthur, tell them! Tell them she has no legal standing!"

Arthur Pendelton stepped to the front of the stage, pulling the court order from his leather briefcase.

"Victoria Sterling," Arthur announced with solemn finality. "By order of the State Supreme Court, Case Number 994-B, your trusteeship over the Sterling-Vance Family Trust has been permanently terminated due to proven acts of grand larceny, corporate homicide investigation, and aggravated felony assault. All personal and corporate accounts under your name have been frozen as of 8:45 PM tonight."

Victoria’s eyes darted frantically around the room, searching for an ally, a friend, a single face that would offer her salvation.

"Marcus! Tell them!" she pleaded, pointing a trembling finger at the lead board member. "Tell them this is an outrage!"

Marcus Green looked up at her with cold, disgust-filled eyes. He slowly stood up, unclipped his sterling silver board member pin, threw it onto the floor, and turned his back on her. One by one, every single board member at the VIP table stood up and turned their backs on the matriarch.

"No..." Victoria whispered, her hands shaking violently as she grasped at her throat. "No, you cannot do this to me! I AM THE STERLING DYNASTY!"

"No, Mother," Julian stepped forward, looking down at her with absolute pity and finality. "You are just an inmate awaiting processing."

Special Agent Ramirez stepped onto the stage, pulling a fresh pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Victoria Sterling, you are under arrest for federal securities fraud, grand larceny, and attempted aggravated assault on a minor heir. You have the right to remain silent."

As the cold steel clicked around Victoria’s wrists for the second time in twenty-four hours, the sapphire necklace around her neck caught on the microphone cord, snapping the antique gold chain.

The fifteen-million-dollar *Sterling Star* tumbled down Victoria’s dress, hitting the stage floor with a dull clatter, rolling to a stop right at Elena’s feet.
