Chapter 13 - The Shattered Bastion

The transmission cut out instantly, leaving the nursery plunged into suffocating silence, save for the ragged breathing of the old housekeeper and Nora's tiny, frantic gasps.

Gabriel didn't hesitate. He stepped to the wall monitor, drove his combat knife directly through the screen’s center processor, ripping the shattered glass and circuitry free from the studs, and let it smash onto the floorboards.

"Pack one bag," Gabriel ordered Maria, his eyes sweeping the panoramic glass windows. "Warm clothes. No electronics. No cell phones. Leave everything else."

"Where... where are we going?" Maria sobbed, clutching her chest. "Mr. Bennett is in the hospital, the police—"

"The police are compromised," Gabriel interrupted, scooping Nora up into his left arm while keeping his right hand free. Nora buried her head into the crook of his neck, her tiny hands clutching his tactical vest so tightly her knuckles turned chalk white. "The transmission was routed through an internal IP address. They aren't watching us from the sea, Maria. They are already inside the property's auxiliary grid."

Gabriel descended to the basement level beneath the wine cellar—a space Arthur Bennett had forgotten existed, but which Gabriel had retrofitted two weeks after taking the servant position. Behind a false rack of dusty Bordeaux lay a climate-controlled armory: two tactical duffels packed with untraceable cash, satellite transceivers, Swedish tactical blades, and suppressed short-barreled carbines.

He strapped a lightweight Kevlar vest over Nora’s small chest, concealing it beneath an oversized wool sweater, then clipped a GPS beacon directly to her bootlace.

"Listen to me, little bird," Gabriel whispered, kneeling so his eyes were level with hers. Nora’s hazel eyes were wide, wet with tears, but she didn't cry aloud. The months of abuse under Victoria had taught her an unnatural, heartbreaking discipline of silence. "You stay behind me. You do not look back. No matter what sounds you hear, you keep your eyes on my back. Understand?"

Nora nodded once, her lower lip trembling, but she reached out and touched the jagged scar running along Gabriel’s jawline—the scar he had earned pulling her from the shattered balcony railing.

Suddenly, the house’s perimeter halogen lights flared violently—then exploded in a sequential chain of loud pops.

*Darkness.*

The mansion plunged into absolute black. Then came the unmistakable *thwack-thwack-thwack* of suppressed subsonic rounds chewing through the triple-paned glass of the living room above them.

"Down!" Gabriel shoved Maria and Nora into the reinforced steel alcove of the wine vault, sliding the heavy vault door shut until only a four-inch firing slit remained.

Upstairs, the sound of boots on shattered glass echoed down the spiral staircase. Three distinct shooters. Military cadence. Heavy armor.

"Clear the foyer! Secure the asset alive, terminate the mercenary!" a gruff voice commanded from the living room floor.

Gabriel pulled night-vision goggles over his eyes, flicking them on. The world turned phosphorescent green. He racked the charging handle of his suppressed carbine with a metallic click that sounded like death itself.

He didn't wait in the basement like a cornered animal. Gabriel slipped through the secondary access shaft into the dark hallway, moving like a phantom through the architecture he had spent months memorizing.

The first intruder stepped past the dining room archway, weapon raised in high-ready.

Gabriel emerged from the shadow of the marble pillar behind him. A gloved hand clamped over the operative’s mouth; a combat blade drove upward beneath the base of the ballistic helmet with surgical ruthlessness. Gabriel lowered the body silently to the floor, stripped the dead man’s spare magazines and tactical radio, and melted back into the shadows before the second man turned the corner.

*"Echo Two, report,"* the radio on the floor squawked quietly.

Gabriel didn't answer. He waited in the dark, breathing through his nose, his weapon aimed at chest level directly through the hollow drywall.
