Chapter 18 - The Monster in the Mirror

"Did you really think a few rocks and a little water could finish me, Gabriel?" Victoria's voice was altered, raspy and distorted by the surgical repairs to her shattered larynx, sounding like venom scraping against stone.

Behind her stood Lord Vance, surrounded by four heavily armored mercenaries with assault shields.

Gabriel immediately pivoted his body, putting his own Kevlar-clad back between Victoria’s gun barrel and Nora. "Arthur, run!" Gabriel roared.

Arthur, propelled by the raw, desperate instinct of a father seeking redemption, lunged toward the starboard railing, tumbling over the side into the lower safety nets just as Victoria opened fire.

A hail of 9mm rounds peppered the steel bulkhead behind Gabriel. One round grazed his left shoulder, slicing through the tactical nylon and drawing a line of fire across his flesh.

Gabriel dove behind the yacht’s heavy outdoor wet-bar, drawing Nora tight against his ribs. The marble counter shattered under the barrage of automatic fire, spraying white dust and glass shards across the deck.

"Bring me the child!" Vance commanded from the safety of the interior bridge. "Kill the stray dog!"

The four shield-bearers advanced in a locked phalanx, their submachine guns hammering the remains of the bar, pinning Gabriel down.

Nora didn't cry. In the deafening roar of gunfire and burning fiberglass, she looked up into Gabriel’s eyes. With her tiny, soot-stained fingers, she reached into the pocket of her windbreaker and pulled out the small glass vial Gabriel had recovered from the safehouse—*Compound 44-X*.

She placed it into Gabriel's hand.

Gabriel looked at the vial, then at the fire raging ten feet away near the auxiliary engine vents. The compound wasn't just a biological sample; the ledger had stated it was an hyper-volatile ethanol-based neuro-inhibitor.

Gabriel slipped his combat knife from its sheath. He taped the vial to the body of an unpinned smoke grenade taken from his vest.

"Hold your breath, Nora," Gabriel commanded, his voice deadly calm. "Hold it right now."

Nora took a deep gulp of air and clamped both hands over her mouth and nose.

Gabriel hurled the grenade-and-vial combination not at the shield-bearers, but directly into the open flames of the ruptured fuel line behind them.

*BOOM.*

The detonation was not a concussive blast, but a massive, blinding flash of emerald chemical fire. A thick, suffocating cloud of dense, iridescent white smoke exploded across the entire aft deck within a fraction of a second.

The mercenaries instantly began convulsing. The aerosolized neuro-inhibitor penetrated their gas filters, attacking their nervous systems within seconds. The men dropped their shields, clutching their throats in agony, collapsing to the deck in violent spasms.

Victoria screamed—a horrific, strangled shriek—stumbling backward into the smoke, blinded and choking on the very chemical weapon her family had spent millions to engineer.

Gabriel surged through the white cloud like a demon unleashed, his combat blade flashing through the mist with terrifying speed. In four fluid, lethal strikes, the remaining guards were neutralized.

He kicked through the shattered glass of the bridge, cornering Lord Sterling Vance against the ship’s electronic helm.
