Chapter 38 - Face to Face with the Devil

Nora walked steadily across the frozen boundary line, her tiny boots crunching in the snow. She stopped five paces away from where Arthur Ashford lay broken in the mud.

The four-year-old girl looked down at her grandfather. There was no anger in her face, no childlike tantrum, no hatred. There was only the terrifying, unyielding purity of absolute truth.

"Grandfather," Nora spoke, her voice clear and carrying across the silent mountain pass. "You told Mama that weak things fall, and strong things push them."

Arthur choked on a mouthful of blood, his trembling hand reaching out toward her shoes. "Nora... my sweet child... tell them... tell them it was an accident... tell them you fell from the balcony by mistake... I will give you everything your mother owned... I will give you the world..."

Nora tilted her head, clutching the gold locket around her neck. "I didn't fall, Grandfather. You took my doll. You threw it over the edge. And when I reached for it... your hands were on my back."

Sarah Vance stepped forward, holding a high-security tactical uplink terminal displaying a streaming video broadcast. The encrypted key had uploaded. Every major international intelligence agency, the Department of Justice, and the global press were receiving the decrypted contents of Julianna Ashford’s vault in real-time.

"It’s over, Arthur," Sarah announced, her voice ringing with the finality of a judge’s gavel. "Your offshore dummy corporations have been frozen. Your private security network has been designated a transnational terrorist syndicate. The forensic recovery teams have already entered the estate. They found the hidden cameras Julianna installed behind the balcony curtains."

Arthur’s face drained of every remaining drop of color. "The... the curtains?"

"Julianna knew you would try," Gabriel said, looking down at the monster. "The day I caught Nora falling into that pool... when I looked up and saw those velvet curtains closing... you thought you were hiding from me. You were actually standing directly in the crosshairs of your daughter-in-law's lens."

Arthur let out a ragged, broken howl of despair—a sound not of remorse, but of total, humiliating defeat. The Ashford empire, built on generations of blood, exploitation, and murder, had vanished in the span of a single night.

Two Canadian tactical officers moved in, pinning Arthur’s arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel restraints around his wrists. They dragged the broken billionaire across the snow toward the detention transport, leaving a dark streak of blood and ash behind him.

Gabriel watched them load Arthur into the transport. His knees finally buckled under the weight of his wounds, his vision dimming into gray static.

Before his body could hit the concrete, small, warm arms wrapped around his neck.

"Gabriel," Nora whispered against his cheek, her voice warm and steady against the bitter mountain air. "You didn't let me fall."

Gabriel smiled faintly, letting the darkness take him as his hand rested gently over hers. "Never, little bird."
