Chapter 39 - The Final Broadcast

Forty-eight hours later, the international media was in the grip of a global frenzy.
Inside the high-security military medical facility in Vancouver, the wall-mounted television screen was muted, but the chyron banners flashed with relentless urgency:
**ASHFORD CONGLOMERATE DISSOLVED: BILLIONAIRE ARTHUR ASHFORD INDICTED ON 44 COUNTS OF TREASON, CONSPIRACY, AND CAPITAL MURDER.**
**JULIANNA ASHFORD’S POSTHUMOUS TESTIMONY EXPOSES GLOBAL MONEY LAUNDERING NETWORK.**
**FOUR-YEAR-OLD HEIRESS NORA ASHFORD DECLARED SOLE BENEFICIARY UNDER FEDERAL PROTECTIVE CUSTODY.**
Gabriel lay in the hospital bed, his torso wrapped tightly in medical compression bandages, IV lines delivering antibiotics and painkillers into his arm. The bruising on his face had faded from angry violet to dull yellow.
The door to the private room clicked open. Sarah Vance walked in, dressed in a sharp civilian suit, carrying a manila dossier stamped with the red seal of the Canadian Department of Justice and the United States Federal Marshals.
"You look surprisingly alive for a man who took a fifty-foot drop and three gunshot wounds," Sarah said, pulling a chair beside his bed.
"Spite is a powerful medicine," Gabriel rasped, sitting up slowly against the pillows. He looked toward the adjacent room, visible through the reinforced glass window.
Nora was sitting on a plush sofa, drawing with colored markers on a sketch pad, watched over by two elite federal marshals. She looked healthy, peaceful, her cheeks rosy from the warmth of the room.
"She’s legally untouchable now," Sarah said, handing the dossier to Gabriel. "The Ashford trust has been restructured into a sovereign blind foundation. Every penny of Arthur’s illicit wealth has been seized by the state, but Julianna’s maternal estate—nearly two billion dollars—remains entirely in Nora’s name. A board of independent federal trustees will oversee it until she comes of age."
Gabriel opened the dossier. The first page was a legal deed of guardianship, bearing Julianna’s signature, dated three days before her supposed fatal "accident" at the mansion.
Gabriel’s eyes stopped on the highlighted clause.
*"In the event of my death and the criminal indictment of Arthur Ashford, full legal guardianship, physical custody, and executive security authority over my daughter, Nora Ashford, shall be transferred unconditionally to Gabriel Mercer."*
Gabriel swallowed hard, his throat tight. "Julianna knew I was just a bodyguard. She knew my record. She knew what I did before I took that job at the mansion."
"She chose you precisely because of who you were, Gabriel," Sarah said softly. "Arthur hired you thinking you were a broke ex-soldier he could intimidate or buy off. Julianna saw a man who would burn the world to the ground before breaking an oath. She was right."
Gabriel closed the folder, his hands steady. "Where do we go from here?"
"A secure location in northern Europe," Sarah answered. "New identities, off-grid estate, permanent diplomatic protection. Arthur will spend the rest of his natural life inside ADX Florence in solitary confinement. The threat is gone."
Gabriel looked through the glass at Nora. The little girl had stopped drawing. She picked up her sketch pad, pressed it against the observation window, and looked directly at Gabriel.
The drawing was simple: a big stone wall protecting a tiny golden bird from falling into a pool of black water.
Gabriel exhaled a long breath. For the first time in five years, the tension coiled around his spine began to unravel.

He thought it was over. He thought the nightmare had finally burned out in the snow.
He was wrong.
