Chapter 31 - The Ghost on the Ridge

The blizzard shrieked like a dying animal, tearing through the frozen gorge with gale-force fury. Gabriel’s breath hitched in his throat, his bloodied knuckles frozen solid against Nora’s wool coat. He forced his watering eyes to focus on the serrated crags of the opposing peak, piercing the swirling veil of white.
It was not a phantom. It was steel and cold vengeance.
Crouched along the knife-edge ridge four hundred yards above Arthur Ashford stood a lone figure in an arctic ghillie suit, braced behind a Barrett .50-caliber anti-materiel sniper rifle. Beside the shooter stood a massive black tactical transport helicopter, its rotors idling silently in a specialized thermal baffle shroud, skids perched precariously on the snowy outcrop. Painted across the tail boom was an emblem Gabriel recognized instantly—an emerald crest bearing the monogram of Julianna’s sovereign family trust.
"Target acquired," a metallic click echoed, not from the ridge, but directly from the dormant satellite transceiver nestled in Nora’s tiny pocket.
Arthur Ashford had not heard it. The billionaire stood tall on the swaying bridge, his ivory cane tapping against the icy wooden slats, his face twisted in smug aristocratic triumph. "Do not prolong the inevitable, Gabriel," Arthur yelled over the wind, gesturing with a gloved hand toward the two snipers flanking him. "This entire mountain is my private estate. The authorities think you are a rogue kidnapper who perished in the fire below. Throw the girl over the railing, drop to your knees, and I will grant you a clean bullet."
Nora didn’t flinch. Her tiny four-year-old fingers squeezed Gabriel’s neck, her pulse steady and fearless against his jugular. "He doesn't know, Gabriel," she whispered into his ear. "Mama said bad men never look up. They only look down at what they want to step on."
Before Gabriel could speak, a crack of thunder tore through the sky—not from the heavens, but from the muzzle of the rifle above.
The heavy .50-caliber round struck the bridge’s northern main support cable with terrifying kinetic energy. The braided steel cable, two inches thick, exploded in an eruption of sparks and severed coils. The bridge heaved violently downward to the left, groaning under astronomical tension. Arthur lost his balance, his ivory cane slipping from his grasp and plunging into the four-foot abyss.
"What is that?!" Arthur shrieked, scrambling to clutch the icy handrail as his snipers swung their rifles frantically toward the whiteout above. "Kill them! Detonate the charges!"
A second shot blasted through the skull of the sniper holding the primary detonator, hurling his lifeless body over the edge into the chasm. The second sniper panicked, lunging forward across the swaying wooden planks to grab the fallen remote.
"Hold on to me, Nora!" Gabriel roared.
He didn't retreat into the flames behind them. Gabriel lunged forward onto the shivering, collapsing bridge, his combat boots biting into the slick wood. He closed the twenty-yard gap in seconds, adrenaline surging through his shattered ribs. As the surviving mercenary picked up the detonator, Gabriel launched his shoulder straight into the man’s sternum. The impact drove the sniper backward off the shattered edge, the detonator tumbling into the abyss below.

The bridge gave a sickening shriek of tearing metal. The second main suspension anchor snapped under the asymmetrical strain.
The entire four-hundred-foot span sheared in half, dropping Arthur Ashford, Gabriel, and Nora into the freefall of the abyss.
