Chapter 33 - The Frozen Tomb

The interior of the tactical helicopter was sterile, lit only by the low hum of red instrument panels and the scent of pressurized aviation fuel. Gabriel collapsed onto the diamond-plate deck, his chest heaving, his hands refusing to release Nora until the cabin door was sealed shut with a heavy pressurized hiss.

Sarah Vance dropped to her knees beside them, her gloved hands quickly inspecting Nora’s pupils and Gabriel’s blood-soaked bandages. "She’s intact. No signs of blunt trauma or hypothermic shock," Sarah reported, exhaling a breath she seemed to have held for months. She pulled a thermal emergency blanket around the little girl.

Nora looked up at Sarah’s tactical insignias, her eyes calm, solemn, and impossibly mature for a four-year-old child. "Aunt Sarah," Nora said softly. "Grandfather fell."

"He didn't hit the river, Nora," Sarah said grimly, tapping a digital tablet mounted to her chest harness. The thermal display showed the lower canyon wall. "He caught an emergency access ledge leading into the old Ashford Mining complex beneath the ridge. His private extraction convoy is already mobilizing at the southern rail terminal. Arthur is alive. And he’s desperate."

Gabriel hauled himself up onto an aluminum bench, his body screaming from a dozen lacerations, his vision swimming with exhaustion. "Why now, Sarah? Where were you when Julianna died in that mansion?"

Sarah’s expression turned to stone. "Julianna didn't die by accident, Gabriel. And she didn't die without a contingency. When Arthur poisoned her champagne six months ago to stage her 'heart failure,' Julianna already knew his financial empire was built on an illegal offshore shadow fund worth eight billion dollars—money stolen directly from Nora’s maternal trust."

Sarah reached into an encrypted lockbox bolted beneath the seat and pulled out an iron cylinder roughly the size of a flare cartridge, engraved with ancient floral scrollwork.

"Julianna split the cryptographic key into two parts," Sarah continued, looking directly at Nora. "The first part was uploaded to the Swiss Federal Banking Commission. The second part was hidden in plain sight. It’s the reason Arthur tried to push Nora off that fourth-floor balcony into the pool. It’s the reason he hired contract killers to scrub every trace of her existence."

Nora reached up to her neck. Beneath her thermal sweater hung the tiny gold locket Gabriel had guarded with his life.

"It’s not a necklace, is it?" Gabriel whispered, his blood running cold as puzzle pieces snapped together.

"It’s an optical DNA scanner," Sarah confirmed. "Julianna encrypted the master drive with Nora’s retinal and biometric code. If Arthur acquires Nora, he extracts the bio-keys and seizes the eight billion dollars, completely cleansing his fraudulent debts. But if Nora reaches the federal consulate in Vancouver before dawn... Arthur Ashford’s entire empire collapses, and an international warrant will lock down every asset he owns on Earth."

Suddenly, the helicopter banked violently to the left. The master alarm blared through the cockpit—a deafening, high-pitched warble that pierced Gabriel’s ears.

"Warning! Radar lock! Incoming surface-to-air missile!" the pilot screamed through the comms.

Through the reinforced cockpit glass, Gabriel saw two fiery streaks erupting from the snow-covered pine forests below. Arthur had brought military-grade anti-aircraft systems to seal the border.

"Brace!" Sarah screamed, diving over Nora as the first missile detonated fifty yards off their starboard wing.
