Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Marble

The world did not end with a thunderclap; it ended with the sound of tempered glass singing like a choir of knives.
For one suspended, agonizing second, Daniel Ashford lived outside of time. His knees slammed into the Italian marble floor of the grand foyer, the breath violently expelled from his lungs as eight months of fragile life crashed into his chest. His arms were locked in an iron cage around Emily, muscles tearing across his shoulders as he absorbed the brutal velocity of her descent.
Silence followed. A thick, suffocating vacuum where the air felt like liquid lead.
Beneath him, Emily was trembling violently, her face deathly pale, framed by dark chestnut hair matted with cold sweat. Her hands were still fused over her rounded belly, knuckles bone-white. She wasn't breathing. Her lips parted, releasing nothing but a faint, rattling wheeze.
"Emily... Emily, look at me!" Daniel’s voice cracked, a desperate animal roar scraping against his vocal cords. His fingers scrambled frantically over her pulse points, checking the curve of her stomach. "Stay with me! Breathe, Em, damn it, breathe!"
A tiny gasp shuddered through her chest. Her eyelids fluttered open, glassy and unfocused, glazed with pure horror. She looked at him not with the relief of a woman saved, but with the hollow, paralyzed dread of a prey animal that knew the predator was still in the room.
Slowly, his heart hammering against his ribs like a war drum, Daniel raised his eyes.
High above them, twenty feet up on the second-floor gallery, the ornate wrought-iron balustrade stood breached. The safety glass had been obliterated into diamond-sharp dust that still drifted down through the chandelier light.
And standing directly at the edge, gazing down into the abyss, was Vanessa.
His sister did not look panicked. She did not look horrified. Her hands were lightly resting on the velvet rail at her hips, her posture regal, almost serene. Her crimson dress flared against the shadows of the upper corridor. For three heart-stopping seconds, brother and sister stared through the veil of falling glass. Then, Vanessa’s mouth curled into a subtle, almost imperceptible smirk. She tilted her head, turned on her designer heels, and vanished into the darkness of the master wing.
"Call 911!" Daniel roared, his voice bouncing off the vaulted ceiling. "Marcus! Mrs. Gable! CALL AN AMBULANCE NOW!"
The estate exploded into chaos. The butler, Marcus, rushed in from the dining hall, dropping a silver tray with a deafening clatter. Maids screamed from the stairwell.
Daniel didn’t wait for them. Emily’s body suddenly went rigid in his arms, her back arching in a spasm of agonizing pain. A dark, crimson stain began blossoming through the pristine lace of her maternity dress, pooling across the cold marble beneath them.
"The baby..." Emily whispered, blood bubbling faintly at the corner of her lips. Her fingers clawed weakly into the lapel of Daniel's suit. "Daniel... she pushed me... she smiled..."
"I know. I saw her. You’re going to live, both of you. I swear on my life, you’re not dying tonight." Daniel gathered her into his arms, ignoring the blinding pain in his own dislocated shoulder as he stood.

He kicked open the heavy mahogany front doors into the pouring rain, carrying his dying wife into the storm, while upstairs, the silhouette of his sister watched from an unlit window, raising a glass of wine in a silent toast.
