Chapter 2 - A Heartbeat on the Edge

The red strobe of the emergency lights painted the sterile corridors of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital in flashes of blood.

"Fetal heart rate is plummeting—down to eighty! Placental abruption confirmed!" a trauma nurse shouted, running alongside the gurney.

"Prep OR Three!" Dr. Vance barked, her surgical gloves already slicked with saline. "We have multiple compound fractures to the mother's pelvis, internal hemorrhaging, and severe head trauma. If we don’t get this baby out in four minutes, we lose them both!"

Daniel tried to follow the gurney through the double swinging doors, his hands soaked in his wife’s blood, but two burly security guards shoved him back.

"Sir, you cannot go in there! You’re injured yourself, Mr. Ashford—"

"Get your hands off me!" Daniel snarled, his eyes wild, veins bulging against his neck. He shoved one guard against the wall with his good arm, but his body betrayed him. The adrenaline was wearing off, and the impact from catching Emily’s falling body hit him like a freight train. His left collarbone was fractured; his ribs screamed with every breath. He collapsed against the waiting room wall, sliding down to the cold linoleum floor.

He buried his face in his trembling, bloodied hands. *Why?* The question clawed at his skull. *Why Vanessa?*

His sister was cold, ambitious, and obsessed with the family fortune, yes. She had openly sneered when Daniel announced he was marrying Emily, an elementary school art teacher from a working-class neighborhood. Vanessa had claimed Emily was a gold-digger who targeted Daniel after his previous engagement fell apart. But murder? Pushing a paralyzed, pregnant woman over a balcony?

The heavy doors at the end of the corridor hissed open.

The rhythmic *click-clack* of high-end stilettos broke the silence.

Daniel’s head snapped up.

Walking down the hall, wrapped in a pristine camel cashmere coat, was Vanessa. Beside her walked Eleanor Ashford, their sixty-two-year-old matriarch, whose face was a mask of aristocratic sorrow, dabbed with a silk handkerchief.

"Daniel! Oh, my God, Daniel!" Vanessa shrieked, breaking into an urgent run. Her face was flushed, tears streaming down her contoured cheeks with flawless dramatic precision. She threw herself to her knees before him, reaching for his hands. "Is she okay? Is the baby okay? The police called our car—we rushed straight from the charity gala downtown!"

Daniel froze.

He stared at the woman kneeling in front of him. Her eyes were wide, brimming with panic and sisterly devotion. There wasn't a trace of the monster who had looked down at him through the broken glass just forty-five minutes ago.

"You were at the gala?" Daniel whispered, his voice dangerously low.

"Of course we were, darling," Eleanor interjected smoothly, resting a manicured hand on Daniel’s shoulder. "Vanessa and I have been at the symphony hall since seven o'clock. Hundreds of people saw us. When Marcus called saying Emily had an accident with her wheelchair on the terrace... Daniel, we couldn't believe it."

Vanessa reached out to wipe a smudge of blood from Daniel's cheek. "It’s devastating, Danny. The balcony railing... we told you that contractor used cheap glass. Emily must have rolled forward accidentally when her brakes failed..."

Daniel grabbed Vanessa’s wrist. He squeezed so hard the bone groaned beneath her skin.

Vanessa gasped in pain. "Daniel, you’re hurting me!"

"I saw you," Daniel hissed, pulling her face inches from his, his eyes burning with terrifying clarity. "I was standing right below you. I watched you shove the chair. I watched you smile."

Vanessa didn't blink. A slow, chilling tear rolled down her cheek, and she looked back at their mother with sheer bewilderment.

"Mother..." Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling. "He’s in shock. The trauma... he’s hallucinating."
