Chapter 3 - The Coldest Mask

"Let go of your sister this instant, Daniel!" Eleanor commanded, her voice slicing through the hospital corridor with the authority of an empress. "Have you lost your mind? Your wife’s tragic carelessness has pushed you into hysteria!"
Daniel didn't release his grip immediately. He studied Vanessa’s eyes. Behind the trembling lower lip and the theatrical tears, he caught it—a flicker of pure, unadulterated venom. She wasn't afraid of him. She had an alibi. A public, bulletproof alibi backed by the matriarch of the Ashford family.
He threw her wrist away from him in disgust. "Get out."
"Daniel, please—" Vanessa sobbed, clutching her bruised arm.
"I said get out before I kill you in front of these cameras," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a gravelly, lethal whisper.
Eleanor stepped between them, her cold gray eyes narrowing. "Control yourself. The press is already gathering outside the main entrance. The Ashford name will not be dragged into the gutter because of your domestic melodramas. We came here out of duty. If you choose to act like a rabid animal, you can deal with the consequences alone."
With a swift flick of her coat, Eleanor turned and guided Vanessa away. As they reached the corner of the corridor, Vanessa glanced back over her mother’s shoulder.
She wasn't crying anymore. Her lips parted in another faint, mocking grin, and she tapped her wristwatch twice. A gesture that screamed: *Your time is running out.*
Daniel's breathing grew ragged. He turned toward the double doors just as Dr. Vance emerged, pulling down her surgical mask. Her scrubs were covered in blood.
"Doctor," Daniel gasped, lunging forward. "Tell me."
Dr. Vance took a deep, exhausted breath. "We delivered a baby girl. She’s three pounds, four ounces. She’s in the NICU on a ventilator. It’s critical, Mr. Ashford, but she has a pulse. She’s fighting."
Daniel let out a broken sob, relief crashing through his chest. "And Emily? My wife?"
The doctor’s expression darkened. "She survived the surgery, but she suffered catastrophic intracranial swelling. We had to induce a medically monitored coma. Even if the swelling subsides... we don't know if she will ever wake up. And if she does, the neurological damage may be permanent."
The room spun around Daniel. They had silenced her.
Emily had survived the fall, but she was trapped in the dark, unable to speak, unable to point the finger at the woman who tried to murder her and her child. Vanessa hadn't just tried to kill Emily; she had orchestrated a scenario where Emily's voice was completely extinguished.
"Can I see her?" Daniel choked out.
"Briefly," Dr. Vance said gently. "Ten minutes."
Inside the ICU, Emily looked tiny among the humming machines and tangled IV lines. Her face was bruised purple and yellow, bandages wrapping her head. Daniel walked to the bedside, falling to his knees and taking her cold, limp hand in his.
"I’m sorry," he wept, pressing his forehead against her bruised knuckles. "I brought you into this family of monsters. I promised to protect you, and I failed."
As his tears soaked her skin, Daniel felt the faintest twitch.
He froze.
Emily’s index finger moved, scratching weakly against the palm of his hand. Once. Twice. Then three times in a distinct pattern.
Daniel leaned in closer, his breath catching. "Emily? Can you hear me?"
Her eyelids remained shut, locked in the chemical coma, but her finger moved again, tracing a single letter into his skin:
*N.*
Then another:
*U.*
*R.*
*S.*
*E.*
Then she stopped. Daniel stared at his open palm, the hair on the back of his neck standing on end.

Emily wasn't warning him about the past. She was warning him about the present.
