Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Nursery

The rain was falling in torrential sheets as Daniel’s SUV tore through the red lights of downtown Manhattan, tires hydroplaning over the slick asphalt.

*N-U-R-S-E.*

Emily’s dying message echoed in Daniel's mind. She hadn't been remembering something; she had overheard them. In her semi-conscious state on the balcony before the fall, Vanessa must have mentioned the contingency plan. If the fall didn't finish the job, the hospital would.

Daniel slammed the brakes at the emergency entrance, abandoning the running vehicle on the curb. He charged through the lobby doors, vaulting over the security turnstile.

The fourth floor was pitch black, illuminated only by the faint, eerie glow of emergency battery strips along the baseboards. The steady hum of medical monitors had been replaced by the high-pitched squeal of manual alarms.

Daniel sprinted down the hall, drawing the Glock from his jacket.

Outside Emily’s room, one of Arthur’s security guards lay unconscious against the wall, a hypodermic needle discarded beside his limp hand. The other was groaning on the floor, clutching his bleeding abdomen.

Daniel kicked the door to Room 412 open with a deafening crash.

Inside, bathed in the pale moonlight filtering through the rain-streaked window, stood a figure in surgical scrubs. She was holding a large syringe filled with a milky white liquid—potassium chloride. The needle was hovering less than an inch away from the IV port running directly into Emily’s central line.

"Step away from the bed," Daniel commanded, aiming the gun straight at the back of the figure's skull. "Move an inch, and I’ll paint this wall with your brains."

The figure froze. Slowly, she turned her head.

She pulled down her surgical mask. It wasn't a stranger.

It was Dr. Cynthia Hayes—Vanessa’s personal physician, the woman who had delivered Vanessa’s own child four years ago.

"Daniel," Dr. Hayes whispered, her hands shaking, the syringe trembling between her fingers. "You don't understand... they have my family. Vanessa has my daughter in a hotel in Zurich. If I don't stop Emily's heart tonight, they’ll kill her!"

"Drop it!" Daniel roared, taking two steps forward.

The doctor broke. With a sob of desperation, she lunged downward, driving the needle toward the IV tube.

*BANG.*

The gunshot exploded within the confined concrete room like a bomb.

The bullet tore through Dr. Hayes's right forearm, shattering the bone. The syringe flew from her grip, shattering against the tiled floor, the lethal milky liquid spreading harmlessly across the linoleum. The doctor collapsed to her knees, screaming and clutching her bleeding arm.

Daniel didn't look at her. He rushed to the side of the bed.

Emily was thrashing, monitors beeping erratically. Her heart rate monitor was spiking to dangerous levels. The shock of the gunshot had jolted her nervous system.

Her eyes snapped open.

This time, there was no fog. No confusion.

Emily looked straight into Daniel’s eyes, her breathing ragged, her bruised face twisted in fierce, maternal fury. She reached up, her trembling fingers curling with sudden, surprising strength around Daniel’s wrist.

"The baby..." she gasped, her voice raw and hoarse, like sandpaper scraping on stone. "Daniel... the nursery... they aren't just here for me."

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

The potassium chloride wasn't just for Emily.

The main target had always been the heir.
