Chapter 12 - The Cell That Never Locked

Daniel’s phone was already pressed to his ear before the note hit the wooden desk. The line rang three times before Arthur’s exhausted voice answered from New York.

"Arthur, tell me Vanessa is still in Danbury," Daniel demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, feral register. "I need you to pull up the prison registry right now."

On the other end of the line, paper shuffled frantically. "Daniel? What are you talking about? Vanessa was processed into Danbury Federal Correctional Institution six months ago. She’s in the psychiatric observation wing. Her appeals were denied. There is no possibility of—"

"I just received Eleanor’s silver rattle at my front door in Mendocino," Daniel barked, every syllable soaked in venomous terror. "Delivered by hand. Smothered in blood. With a note written in her voice. Arthur, check the damn cameras!"

Silence fell across the line, heavy and suffocating. The distinct clatter of Arthur typing frantically into his terminal could be heard over the cellular hiss. Then, an audible gasp.

"Daniel... that’s impossible," Arthur stammered, the lawyer's composed veneer disintegrating. "The federal registry updated three hours ago. Vanessa Ashford was transferred out on a medical furlough last Tuesday for emergency neurological evaluation at Bellevue. But... there's no record of her arrival at Bellevue."

"What did you say?" Daniel felt the ground beneath him tilt violently.

"The transport order was signed by Judge Vance—the judge who retired last month. It was a ghost warrant, Daniel! The transport vehicle was found torched beneath the Pulaski Skyway two nights ago. The two marshals inside were shot through the back of the head." Arthur was breathing so hard he sounded like he was hyperventilating. "Someone with bottomless resources orchestrated an extraction. The media hasn't even broken the story because the Department of Justice put a federal blackout on the file. They thought she fled the country."

"She didn't flee the country," Daniel whispered, staring out the window toward the sunlit terrace where his wife and baby sat completely exposed. "She’s here. She’s been watching us."

"Daniel, get Emily and Lily out of that house immediately. I’m hiring a private tactical extraction team from San Francisco, but it will take them at least three hours to reach Mendocino—"

A sharp click ended the call. Daniel stared at the phone screen. The signal bars had plummeted to zero. Simultaneously, the recessed LED lights in the study flickered twice and died. The backup generator failed to hum to life.

The perimeter had been cut.
