Chapter 14 - Eleanor's Dying Whisper

"Step back, Vanessa!" Daniel’s voice cracked like thunder through the vaulted living room. His finger tightened on the trigger, aligning the iron sights directly between her manic, unblinking eyes. "Drop it or I swear to God I’ll put a bullet through your skull before you can press the switch."
Vanessa didn't flinch. Instead, she threw her head back and laughed—a broken, hysterical sound that sent chills crawling down Daniel’s spine.
"You always were so wonderfully predictable, Danny," she purred, taking a slow, deliberate step into the living room. Her eyes flicked toward the pantry door, lingering on the subtle rustle of Emily’s coat. "You think I came here to blow you up? Death is far too clean for what you took from me. You stripped my name. You stripped our mother of her dignity. Did you know she died, Daniel?"
Daniel’s grip on the pistol didn't waver, but a shockwave rippled through his chest. "Eleanor had a stroke. She’s in the state hospice."
"She *was*," Vanessa hissed, her eyes blazing with raw, volcanic hatred. "Until two nights ago. Her heart stopped while she was choking on her own saliva, strapped to a rusted cot in a room that smelled of urine. Mother died alone, Daniel! While you were playing house on the beach with that low-born gutter rat!"
Vanessa reached into her trench coat. Daniel cocked the hammer. "Don't move!"
Vanessa sneered and pulled out an audio recorder, tossing it onto the wool rug between them. It clattered to a stop.
"Mother managed to speak before she flatlined," Vanessa whispered, her voice dropping into a guttural, terrifying purr. "The nurses thought she was delirious. But she wasn't talking to the doctors. She was talking to *him*. Press play, Danny. Listen to the dynasty crumble."
With his weapon trained on his sister, Daniel kicked the play button with the toe of his boot.
Through the crackle of static and the rhythmic beep of a dying cardiac monitor, Eleanor Ashford’s mangled, raspy voice filled the room:
*"Julian... my firstborn... the sea will claim them. The trust was never Daniel’s. Burn the girl... take the child... finish what I began..."*
Daniel’s blood turned to liquid ice. *Julian?*
May you like
The Ashford family had only two children. Julian was their uncle who had supposedly drowned in a yachting accident thirty years ago—or so Daniel had been told since boyhood.
"You don't understand the bloodline you’re protecting, Daniel," Vanessa laughed, stepping backward toward the open balcony railing, the fog swirling around her ankles like hungry specters. "I wasn't working alone. I was just the distraction."
