Chapter 11 - The Silver Rattle and the Dead Woman’s Lullaby

The afternoon sun should have felt like a blessing, warming the manicured lawns of the Vance estate where hundreds of white hydrangeas swayed in the soft autumn breeze. Laughter bubbled from the catering tents; champagne flutes clinked in rhythmic celebration of Julian Jr.’s first birthday. For the first time in twelve agonizing months, Clara felt the tension leave her shoulders. The pool where she had nearly drowned while eight months pregnant had been permanently drained and transformed into a sunken garden of marble and lavender. The nightmare was supposed to be over. Eleanor Vance, the matriarch who had orchestrated the cold-blooded attempt on her life, was locked behind the concrete and razor wire of Taycheedah Correctional Institution, stripped of her billions and her pride.
Julian stood beside Clara, his arm wrapped firmly around her waist, looking down at their son who was gleefully smashing a strawberry cupcake between his tiny fists. Arthur, their loyal head of security, approached with a quiet smile, holding a stack of designer gift boxes delivered by courier.
"The last of the VIP parcels from the gate, Mr. Vance," Arthur said softly. "All screened and cleared by the canine unit."
Clara smiled, reaching down to wipe frosting from JJ’s cheek. But as Julian picked up a heavy, velvet-lined box wrapped in unmarked platinum paper, Clara’s breath hitched. There was no card, only a wax seal stamped with an emblem Julian hadn't seen since childhood—a serpent coiled around an hourglass.
"Julian, wait," Clara whispered, a sudden, primal dread tightening the skin across the back of her neck. "Who sent that?"
Julian broke the seal. Inside lay an antique silver baby rattle, blackened slightly at the edges by age, intricately engraved with the initials *J.V.* But beneath the silver head of the rattle, hidden within the velvet casing, a miniature digital audio transponder flickered to life, its pinprick red light glowing like an eye opening in the dark.
A sharp, static pop crackled through the tiny speaker.
Then came the voice. Cold. Melodic. Distinctly aristocratic, humming a German lullaby that made Julian’s blood instantly freeze to sub-zero temperatures.
"Happy birthday, little prince," Eleanor’s unmistakable cadence whispered from the speaker, silky and venomous. "You survived the deep end, Clara darling. But did you honestly believe Harold was the only coward in our family? Look beneath the cradle. The bloodline doesn't end with my arrest. It ends when my real heir comes home to collect the debt."
The audio cut out with a harsh click.
A deafening silence descended upon the terrace. Clara gripped JJ so tightly to her chest that the baby let out a bewildered whimper. Julian stared at the silver rattle, his hands trembling with a sudden, feral fury.
"Arthur," Julian roared, his voice slicing through the party like a thunderclap, sending gasps through the assembled socialites. "Lock the perimeter down right now! Shut the iron gates! Scan every single vehicle!"
"Julian..." Clara gasped, backing away from the table, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "She’s in prison. She’s locked away for the rest of her life!"

Julian turned the silver rattle over. On the underside of the handle, fresh letters had been carved violently into the metal: *CELL BLOCK D, BED 14. SHE’S WAITING.*
