Chapter 6 - A Mother’s Twisted Will

Julian walked to the side of the hospital bed, his heart breaking into a thousand pieces at the sheer terror in Clara's eyes. He sat down gently on the edge of the mattress, gathering her frail, trembling hands into his own and kissing them with desperate tenderness.

"He's alive, Clara," Julian whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "He is alive. He is in the NICU right now. The doctors got his heart beating again. He's fighting."

Clara let out a ragged, trembling breath, her tears spilling freely onto the white pillowcase. "Can he... can he breathe? Did he suffer?"

Julian swallowed the lump of glass in his throat. He couldn't lie to her, but he couldn't break her fragile spirit either. "He’s on a ventilator, baby. He's small, and he had a hard arrival, but the doctors say he has a strong pulse. He has your stubbornness. He’s not giving up, Clara. And neither can you."

Clara closed her eyes, squeezing his hands with what little strength she had left. Then, her breathing grew shallow, and her brow furrowed with remembered agony. "Julian... your mother... it wasn't an accident. You have to believe me. She—"

"I know," Julian interrupted softly. He reached into his pocket, pulled out the cracked tablet, and gently placed it on the bedside table. "I have the footage, Clara. All of it. In 4K. With pristine audio. I saw everything she did to you. I heard everything she said."

Clara looked at the tablet, her eyes widening in disbelief. "The cameras? But she said... she told the guests that the servers were destroyed."

"She destroyed the local decoys," Julian replied, his voice turning as cold as liquid nitrogen. "She doesn't know I have the Zurich cloud backup. She thinks she got away with it. She thinks she can sweep this under the rug with the family lawyers in the morning."

"Why, Julian?" Clara’s voice cracked with pure, uncomprehending grief. "Why does she hate me so much? I know she wanted you to marry an heiress, a girl from the Vanderbuilt or Astor circles, but to kill our child? To try and drown me in front of fifty people? It doesn't make sense!"

Julian looked away, his jaw tightening so hard the muscles jumped beneath his skin. "It wasn't just about social class, Clara. It was about money. And power."

"What do you mean?"

Julian leaned closer, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "Two years ago, my grandfather—the real founder of Vance Global—passed away. In his secret codicil to the family trust, he stipulated that the sixty-percent controlling interest in the conglomerate would bypass my mother and father entirely. My grandfather knew Victoria was a reckless, narcissistic sociopath who had secretly run up hundreds of millions of dollars in offshore debt funding her failed vanity projects."

Clara listened, her breath hitching in her chest.

"Grandfather’s trust stated that the controlling shares would transfer directly to me on my thirtieth birthday," Julian explained, his eyes burning with disgust. "Unless... I fathered a direct male heir before that date. If a child was born to me, the entire Vance trust—the real estate, the tech patents, the private banking accounts totaling over twelve billion dollars—would immediately lock into an irrevocable trust under the sole guardianship of the child's mother and father."

Clara gasped, her hand instinctively flying to her flat, heavily bandaged abdomen. "If our baby was born... she would lose access to the trust forever."

"Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM," Julian said, checking the clock on the wall—it was already 4:15 AM—"the Vance Family Trust board convenes for its annual emergency distribution meeting. Victoria had already filed an emergency petition claiming I was unfit to manage the trust due to 'manipulative outside influence'—meaning you. If you and the baby had died tonight, Julian Vance would have been a broken, grieving shell. Victoria would have petitioned for full conservatorship over me and the entire twelve-billion-dollar empire."

The horrifying truth hung in the sterile hospital air like a toxic cloud.

Victoria hadn't just acted out of petty snobbery or mother-in-law jealousy. She had planned a cold, calculated double murder to protect her access to a multi-billion-dollar fortune that was slipping through her manicured fingers. She was facing public bankruptcy and personal ruin, and she had chosen to drown her own grandson to save herself.

Suddenly, the door to Room 312 clicked open.

Julian’s private head of personal security, Marcus Vance (no relation, a former Navy SEAL who was loyal only to Julian), stepped into the room. His face was grim.

"Mr. Vance," Marcus whispered, keeping his eyes respectfully averted from Clara. "We have a situation."

Julian stood up immediately. "What is it?"

"Your mother just left the penthouse," Marcus reported. "She didn't go home to the Lake Forest estate. Her private driver just dropped her off at the Vance Global corporate headquarters downtown. She has called an emergency, closed-door session of the Board of Directors for 7:00 AM—two hours before the scheduled trust meeting."

Julian’s eyes narrowed into slits of lethal blue ice. "What is her agenda?"

"She has submitted an emergency resolution," Marcus said, handing Julian a printed memo. "Citing the 'tragic, fatal rooftop accident and the severe emotional incapacity of the CEO,' Victoria Vance is moving to immediately strip you of your executive authority and declare herself interim Chairman of the Board."

Clara gasped from the bed. "She thinks... she thinks our baby is already dead. She thinks she won!"

Julian looked down at the memo, then looked over at his wife. A slow, terrifying smile spread across his face—the smile of a predator who had just watched his prey walk straight into a steel trap.

"Let her think she won," Julian whispered softly. He turned to Marcus. "Get my tailored suit from the penthouse. The black one. And call Dr. Sterling down from the NICU. I need a medical transport unit ready by 6:30 AM."

"Julian, what are you doing?" Clara asked, fear and awe mingling in her voice.

May you like

Julian leaned down and pressed a long, gentle kiss against her forehead. "I'm going to attend my mother’s board meeting, Clara. And I'm going to show the world the monster she truly is."
