Chapter 14 - The Irish Cottage Massacre

Julian paced the length of his private study, his phone pressed violently against his ear as thunder rattled the leaded glass windows.

"Arthur! Tell me you reached Harold’s estate in Galway!" Julian shouted over the storm.

"Sir, the private investigator we hired arrived at the cottage twenty minutes ago," Arthur's voice came through the line, strained and ragged. "The local Garda were already there."

Julian stopped dead. A cold dread pooled in his gut. "What happened to my father?"

"Harold is dead, Julian."

The words hung in the air, heavy and lethal. Despite everything Harold had allowed Eleanor to do, he was still Julian’s father—the man who had, in the end, handed over the evidence that put Eleanor away.

"How?" Julian whispered.

"Drowned," Arthur replied, his voice breaking slightly. "In the stone basin of his private courtyard. The Garda say it looks like an accident, that he slipped in the dark. But Julian... our investigator managed to slip inside the house before the coroners sealed it. Harold’s safe was torn open from the inside wall. And on the dining room table, burned to a crisp, was a dossier labeled *Project Vivian - Zurich 1994*."

Julian closed his eyes, his hand crushing the leather edge of his desk. Eleanor wasn't bluffing. She hadn't been delusional in that prison infirmary. There really was another Vance. A ghost born from Eleanor’s oldest sin, now moving through the shadows, systematically eliminating anyone who knew the truth of her existence.

"Julian!"

Clara’s panicked scream ripped through the quiet of the estate.

Julian dropped the phone and sprinted down the corridor, ripping his sidearm from the hidden holster beneath his desk. He burst into the nursery to find Clara kneeling on the soaked rug, cradling a crying JJ in her arms, pointing a trembling finger toward the overflowing bathroom and the chilling message stabbed into the mirror.

Julian took one look at the scalpel and the lilies, then knelt down, wrapping his powerful arms around Clara and his son.

"We are leaving this house tonight," Julian commanded, his voice dark with a fury Clara had never seen in him before. "Pack only what you need for JJ. We move to the downtown penthouse under full armed guard."

"Who is doing this, Julian?" Clara cried, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as she buried her face in his neck. "She’s in a cage! Who is in our house?!"

Julian pulled the scalpel from the glass, examining the engraved surgical steel. Beneath the blade was the trademark of St. Jude's Children's Memorial—the very hospital where Clara had given birth, and the very foundation she was now funding.

"Her daughter," Julian said quietly, the truth bitter as ash. "My sister."
