Chapter 17 - Whispers Beneath the Bedrock

The Drake Hotel ballroom was a spectacle of blinding crystal chandeliers, towering floral arrangements, and Chicago’s most ruthless elite. Flashes from the press corps erupted continuously as Julian and Clara arrived, arm in arm. Clara looked magnificent in an emerald satin gown, but beneath the silk, her muscles were coiled like steel springs. JJ was hidden away in an undisclosed safehouse under twenty-four-hour guard by Arthur’s top military contractors.

At the far end of the room, standing beside the governor and three state supreme court justices, stood Vivian Cross. She was wearing an ivory gown, holding a glass of vintage champagne, smiling with all the charm and lethal grace of a young Eleanor Vance.

Julian leaned close to Clara’s ear. "The team just breached Harold’s private archives in Zurich. We found the original blueprints of the estate's north reservoir."

"What’s down there, Julian?" Clara asked, keeping her eyes fixed on Vivian.

"In 1994, Harold wasn't just laundering money," Julian whispered grimly. "A whistleblower at the state environmental board discovered Harold was dumping chemical runoff into the city’s primary water reservoir. Harold paid Eleanor’s father to make the whistleblower disappear. The man vanished twenty-eight years ago. Eleanor helped Harold bury the man’s car—and his body—inside the subterranean vault beneath our sunken garden."

Clara felt a sickening chill run through her. "The garden... where our pool used to be."

"Eleanor used that secret to control Harold his entire life," Julian said. "And Vivian knows that if she excavates that vault under the guise of an estate trust dispute, Harold’s entire remaining offshore reserves—worth over three hundred million dollars, hidden in bearer bonds inside that car—become hers as the surviving sole trustee. She doesn't just want revenge, Clara. She wants the fortune Eleanor never gave her."

Suddenly, the lights in the grand ballroom flickered and dimmed.

The master of ceremonies stepped to the podium. "Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we honor true courage. Please welcome Dr. Vivian Cross, presenting the Vance Foundation’s inaugural address!"

Applause thundered through the hall. Vivian stepped up to the microphone, her smile radiant, her eyes locked dead onto Clara.

"Thank you," Vivian began smoothly. "Tonight is about family. About what we inherit, and what we bury. Some mothers give their children life. Other mothers... leave behind legacies that must be washed clean in the deep dark."

Vivian pressed a button on the podium console, activating the massive projection screen behind her.

Instead of an architectural rendering of the hospital wing, a live video feed flickered onto the screen.

The screen showed a dark, stone-walled chamber. In the center of the frame, tied to a wooden chair surrounded by rising, murky water, was Arthur—bleeding heavily from his temple.

And beside the chair, resting peacefully inside a portable bassinet, was JJ.
