Chapter 19 - The Drowning Vault

The iron gates of the Vance estate stood smashed open, hanging uselessly from their stone pillars. Julian slammed the SUV to a halt beside the ruins of the drained pool, where the ground had been torn open by heavy excavating equipment. A yawning, black chasm led down into the subterranean bedrock beneath the estate.
The storm was howling now, sheets of icy rain transforming the dirt into thick mud.
Julian and Clara descended into the darkness, tactical flashlights cutting through the thick, damp mist. The air smelled of sulfur, rot, and ancient concrete. Water roared through old industrial drainage pipes all around them, vibrating through the stone walls.
They kicked open a heavy, rusted steel bulkhead.
Inside the cavernous stone reservoir, the water was already three feet deep and rising with terrifying speed. In the center of the flooded chamber, chained to a rusted 1990s sedan half-buried in concrete, sat Arthur, barely conscious, coughing up dirty water.
And floating five yards away, held only by a nylon cord wrapped around an exposed rusty pipe, was JJ’s bassinet. The water was only four inches from spilling over the woven lip.
"JJ!" Clara lunged forward into the freezing water, but a gunshot shattered the air, kicking up a spray of concrete inches from her feet.
High above them on the metal catwalk, Vivian stood holding an assault rifle, rain dripping from her hair, her eyes glowing with absolute madness.
"Step back, Clara!" Vivian screamed over the roaring water. "One more step and the rope snaps!"
Julian raised his weapon, targeting Vivian, but two laser sights from the shadows behind Vivian locked directly onto Julian’s chest.
"Drop it, little brother!" Vivian sneered. "Drop it or my men put three holes through your lungs before you can blink!"
Julian hesitated, his chest heaving, then slowly dropped his gun into the murky water.
"You have what you want, Vivian," Julian shouted, his voice echoing through the flooded cavern. "Harold is dead. The bearer bonds inside that car are right beneath you! Take them! Take the money and let my son go!"
Vivian let out a wild, bitter laugh that echoed through the stone chamber like Eleanor’s ghost.
"You think this is about Harold's dirty paper?!" Vivian screamed, tears of pure hatred spilling from her eyes. "Eleanor threw me away into an orphanage like garbage! She gave you the Vance name! She gave you the empire, the luxury, the mother’s love I starved for! And when she went to prison, she wrote to me. Do you know what she wrote in her final letter, Julian?!"
Vivian pulled a crumpled, blood-stained envelope from her pocket.
"She wrote: *'You were always the weak one, Vivian. Julian took my empire, but at least he had the spine of a true Vance. You will always be a bastard born in the dark.'*"
Vivian leveled the rifle directly at the floating bassinet.

"She loved you, Julian. Even in her hatred, she respected you. So I’m going to take from you what Eleanor tried and failed to destroy. I’m going to watch your son sink to the bottom of this grave!"
