Chapter 5 - The Surveillance Ghost

While the doctors in the NICU fought to keep Julian’s three-pound son alive inside a clear plastic isolette, Julian did not sit idly by the bedside weeping.

He stood in the small family waiting room of the pediatric intensive care unit, his wet clothes finally replaced by a pair of generic green hospital scrubs given to him by an orderly. His dark hair was still damp, his face pale and drawn. In his hand, he held a sleek, military-grade encrypted tablet.

Julian Vance was not merely a wealthy heir who attended charity galas; he was the CEO of Vance Global Tech, a multi-billion-dollar enterprise that specialized in quantum cybersecurity and advanced optical recognition systems. His mother thought he was just an emotional boy blinded by romantic love.

She had forgotten who had designed the security infrastructure of Vance Tower.

Julian tapped his thumb against the tablet's fingerprint scanner. The screen glowed to life, connecting via a secure satellite uplink directly to the private mainframe buried beneath his penthouse.

A red warning prompt flashed on the screen:

`ERROR: SYSTEM COMPROMISED. STORAGE ARRAY 04 SUFFERED MASSIVE THERMAL OVERLOAD AT 11:42 PM. SURVEILLANCE LOGS DESTROYED.`

Julian let out a cold, humorless chuckle. "You're getting predictable, Mother."

Victoria thought she had burned the evidence. She had sent her pet security guards to torch the local servers with a thermite charge disguised as an electrical short. To the Chicago Police Department, it would look like a tragic accident: an unfortunate slip by a pregnant woman, followed by a tragic utility fire that destroyed the only witness footage.

What Victoria Vance did not know was that six months ago, when Clara first told Julian she was pregnant, Julian had quietly overhauled the entire penthouse security grid. He had known his mother’s vicious nature better than anyone. He had known how much she despised Clara.

Julian had installed four micro-aperture cameras concealed inside the architectural light fixtures overlooking the infinity pool. These cameras did not feed into the penthouse server room. They streamed encrypted 4K footage continuously to an off-site cloud server hosted in Zurich, Switzerland.

With trembling fingers, Julian entered his thirty-two-character master key.

The loading icon spun for three agonizing seconds. Then, a file appeared on the screen:

`CAM_SOUTH_ROOFTOP_23:14:02.mp4`

Julian pressed play.

The high-definition video was crystal clear, capturing the terrace in vivid color and crisp digital audio.

Julian watched with an aching heart as Clara walked to the edge of the pool, gently rubbing her belly, looking up at the Chicago night sky with a peaceful smile.

Then came Victoria.

The audio mic, sensitive enough to pick up a whisper in a storm, caught every single word that escaped his mother’s mouth.

*"Julian thinks you’re going to tie him down forever with this bastard brat. You think you’ve won the Vance crown, don't you, little gutter rat?"*

Julian watched his mother grip the two-hundred-pound iron sofa. He saw the cold, calculated calculation in her eyes as she shoved it straight toward Clara’s belly. He saw Clara dodge with desperate maternal reflexes. And then, he saw the moment that would haunt him for the rest of his life:

Victoria sprinting around the furniture, blocking the only exit, sneering like a demon, and driving the steel-reinforced pointed heel of her designer shoe directly into Clara’s pregnant abdomen before kicking her over the edge into the freezing abyss.

The audio captured Clara’s terrified scream, followed by the violent splash.

And then, the camera captured Victoria Vance standing at the edge of the pool. She didn't call for help. She didn't look shocked. She looked down at the churning water, smoothed her emerald dress, and said aloud to the empty air:

*"Die quietly, you filthy leech."*

Julian stared at the screen. The glass of the tablet cracked under the sheer pressure of his tightening grip.

A tear rolled down his cheek, but it wasn't a tear of sorrow. It was the condensation of pure, unadulterated venom. The last lingering shred of filial affection, the childhood memories of the mother who had raised him, vanished into ash.

He locked the tablet and tucked it into his scrub pocket.

He walked out of the waiting room and down the hall toward the surgical recovery unit. It was 3:00 AM.

The nurse on duty tried to stop him as he approached Room 312, but Julian looked at her with eyes so terrifyingly hollow that she immediately stepped aside without uttering a single word.

Julian pushed open the heavy wooden door.

The room was dim, illuminated only by the pale green and blue monitors tracing Clara’s fragile vitals. She was hooked to three intravenous lines, an oxygen cannula resting beneath her nose. Her face was as white as the hospital sheets, her lips dry and cracked.

The moment the door clicked shut, Clara’s eyes opened.

She turned her head slowly, painfully, toward him. Her gaze dropped to his empty arms. She saw no baby. She saw only the sorrow etched into his face.

May you like

"Julian..." she wept, a sound that tore straight through his soul. "Where is our son? Is he... is he dead?"
