Chapter 13 - Whispers Through the Vent

Night fell over Cape Falcon like an iron curtain. The fog rolled off the ocean in thick, undulating banks, pressing against the cottage glass until the outside world vanished into an impenetrable wall of milky white. The only sound was the rhythmic, deafening crash of fifty-foot breakers slamming into the rocks below.
Daniel sat in an armchair at the top of the stairs, the shotgun rested across his thighs, the Glock tucked into his waistband. Downstairs was pitched in darkness; every blind was drawn, every entry point secured with temporary reinforced latches. He had called the State Police, but the fog had caused a multi-car pileup on Route 1, closing the only coastal access bridge. The dispatcher had told him an officer would be dispatched "as soon as weather and visibility permit."
Daniel knew nobody was coming. He had known it the second he found the doll. This had always been personal. Vanessa didn't just want freedom; she wanted an audience for her masterwork.
"Daddy?"
A tiny voice, barely louder than the hum of the refrigerator, drifted through the dark hallway.
Daniel stood instantly, his bare feet silent on the floorboards. "Noah? Go back to sleep, bud."
"It’s not me, Dad," Noah whispered from his bedroom. He was standing in his doorway, wearing his flannel pajamas, his hands trembling violently as he pointed toward the floor vent near the linen closet. "It’s coming from the floor. Under the house."
Daniel froze. Every fiber of his nervous system screamed in alarm. He stepped softly past Noah, motioning for the boy to step back into the nursery where Maya slept.
Daniel knelt beside the brass grate of the air vent. The cottage used an old oil-furnace heating system with ducts running through the uninsulated crawlspace beneath the floorboards. The air coming up through the slats smelled wrong. It didn't smell like burning oil or dust.
It smelled like expensive French lilac perfume.
Clara’s favorite scent. The scent Vanessa had stolen and worn every day after Clara died.
Daniel leaned his ear down toward the brass lattice. At first, there was only the hum of the fan. Then, faintly, riding the warm current of forced air, came a soft, lilting hum.
It was a lullaby. *Rock-a-bye baby, on the tree top...*
"Vanessa," Daniel snarled, his voice a low, animal growl into the vent.
The humming abruptly stopped. A low, raspy chuckle echoed through the tin pipes, distorted and wet, as if bubbling up from a damaged throat.
"You took my life, Daniel," her voice slid through the vent, silky, intimate, and chillingly sane. "You burned my house. You took my future. Did you really think you could play happy little family on my money?"
"Where are you?" Daniel whispered, his finger tightening on the trigger of the shotgun. "Show your face. Face me like you did before."
"Why would I face you, darling?" Vanessa’s laughter rippled, echoing from multiple vents along the second-floor corridor like a venomous snake coiling through the walls. "I’m not down here to talk to you. I’m down here because Clara told me where the foundation was weak. Did you know Clara and I used to come here as girls? Long before she met you? She loved this house. She died so I could have it."
Daniel felt the blood drain from his face. "You’re lying. Clara never owned this property."
"Check the deed, my sweet idiot," Vanessa whispered, the voice drifting closer to the nursery vent. "Check who sold it to your shell company last week. I’ve been inside your walls since you carried the boxes in."

A loud, violent crash of splintering wood erupted from directly beneath Maya’s crib.
