Chapter 15 - Blackout at High Tide

The ocean wind howled like a wounded beast, driving stinging pellets of sleet sideways through the darkness. Daniel had no choice. The driveway was blocked by Julian’s idling tow truck; Vanessa was advancing across the lawn with the burning phosphorus flare raised high. The only path left was the narrow, treacherous wooden staircase spiraling down the sheer face of the cliff to the rocky cove below.
"Noah, hold your sister’s legs. Keep her head tucked into my chest. Whatever happens, do not look down, do not let go of my belt!" Daniel commanded, his voice raw against the gale.
"I won't let go, Dad!" Noah cried, burying his small fists into Daniel’s leather belt as Daniel shielded Maya with his entire upper body.
Daniel took the first step down the wooden stairs. The steps were slick with sea spray and rotting kelp. Seventy feet below, the black ocean churned violently against the rocks, white foam exploding into the night like bursting artillery shells. High tide had arrived; the sandy beach where he had found the doll was completely submerged under five feet of violent, boiling water.
Behind them on the bluff, a gunshot cracked.
The bullet splintered the wooden handrail inches from Daniel’s ear. He whirled, firing his Glock into the fog toward the muzzle flash. Julian Vance was stumbling toward the top of the stairs, wielding a heavy semi-automatic pistol, his face twisted in a murderous grimace.
"Give her the girl, Daniel!" Julian bellowed over the roar of the surf. "You take the boy and run! That was the deal! Just give her the girl!"
*The girl.*
Daniel’s blood turned to liquid nitrogen. "What are you talking about?!"
"Maya isn't Clara’s daughter, you fool!" Vanessa’s voice cut through the darkness, cold and piercing as she stepped up beside Julian at the cliff’s edge. She was smiling, that terrifying, flawless smile that had charmed society galas and masked a sociopath’s blackened soul. "Clara’s pregnancy ended in the third trimester at St. Jude’s! Who do you think carried that baby to term? Whose blood do you think runs through her veins?!"
The words hit Daniel with the physical force of a sledgehammer. The memory of Clara’s prolonged hospital stay two years ago—the strange, private wing at St. Jude’s, the sealed medical records, Clara’s sudden, suffocating depression that followed the birth—flooded back to him in a devastating flash.
"You're lying," Daniel choked out, his grip on Maya tightening until the baby let out a sharp wail. "You’re an insane monster who will say anything to tear this family apart!"
"Check the safe deposit box, Daniel!" Vanessa laughed, holding up the brass case. "Clara paid me three million dollars to carry her husband’s child when her own body failed! And then she locked me out of the nursery! She took my baby, called her Maya, and treated me like a hired maid! Who was the monster, Daniel?! Who was the thief?!"
With a flick of her wrist, Vanessa fired the flare gun.
The red phosphorus flare arced through the sky, illuminating the entire cliff face in an apocalyptic crimson glow. In the blinding light, Daniel saw Julian raise his weapon to execute them.

Daniel didn't flinch. He raised the Glock and pulled the trigger three times in rapid succession.
