Chapter 35 - A Phantom in the Fog

Daniel snapped his head toward the cavern’s opening.

Through the jagged, arched rock frame that opened onto the raging ocean, a massive spotlight suddenly cut through the thick Atlantic fog, illuminating the torrential rain in a blinding cone of white light.

A twin-engine, 45-foot tactical assault boat sat idling just beyond the breakers, its twin heavy machine guns mounted on the bow, riding the massive eight-foot swells with predatory grace. Clara had not just secured the sky; she had blockaded the ocean. They were caught in an absolute crossfire: soldiers above them in the lighthouse, a gunboat blocking the sea mouth, and freezing tide water rising two inches every minute.

"We can't swim past that boat," Noah whispered, his teeth clattering so violently he could barely form words. "They'll cut us in half."

Daniel looked down at the military lockbox in his hands. It held a thumbprint scanner beside a mechanical bypass slot. He pressed his right thumb against the glass screen.

*BEEP. ACCESS DENIED.*

He pressed Maya’s tiny, limp index finger against the glass.

*BEEP-CHIRP. DNA IDENTIFIED: SUBJECT 02. OVERRIDE AUTHORIZED.*

The heavy titanium latches popped open with a hiss of decompressed nitrogen.

Inside the foam-lined interior lay no gold or cash. There were two items: a military-grade adrenaline auto-injector, a satellite transponder beacon, and a sealed glass cylinder containing a deep crimson biological sample labeled: *VANCE-GENOME MATERNAL ROOT — CLARA / ELIZABETH (IDENTICAL TWIN).*

Beside the cylinder was a single handwritten note on heavy parchment, written in elegant, hurried feminine handwriting—a handwriting Daniel knew was distinctly different from the cold, angular script of his wife:

*“Daniel—if you are reading this, Clara has already found me. She thinks she killed me to steal my children. Maya is not her daughter. Noah is not an orphan. Clara is a clone-surrogate who liquidated our family to claim the Vance Dynasty Trust. Find the Ghost Ship. Key code 0914. Save my babies.”*

Daniel’s mind spun into hyperspace. *Elizabeth.* Clara’s twin sister. The woman Clara claimed had died in a car crash six years ago. The woman Daniel had never met—or so he thought.

"Dad! The water's at my knees!" Noah cried.

Daniel slammed the lockbox shut, grabbed the waterproof emergency gear inside, and pulled Noah close. "Noah, see that narrow air vent in the cavern ceiling behind the kelp?"

Noah looked up. Ten feet above the rising water was a fissure where sea air was whistling through—a natural blowhole leading out to the blind side of the Black Crag, facing away from the assault boat.

"It's too small for you, Dad!" Noah shouted.

"It's big enough for you and Maya," Daniel said. He took Noah’s small hands, wrapping the baby tightly into an airtight, flotation-equipped survival sling, securing her to Noah’s chest. "You climb up that chimney. On the other side, there's a rocky shelf hidden by the fog. You wait for me there. Five minutes."

"No! I'm not leaving you!" Noah sobbed, fighting him.

"You're not leaving me, Noah—you're leading the way!" Daniel barked with absolute authority, locking eyes with the boy. "You're the man of this family now if I fall. You protect your sister! Move!"

Daniel lifted Noah by the waist, hoisting him up with every ounce of strength left in his battered arms. Noah reached out, caught the wet granite edges of the blowhole, and pulled himself and Maya into the crevice just as a massive wave surged into the cavern, knocking Daniel off his feet into the boiling deep.
