Chapter 17 - Blood on the White Porch

The structural timber shrieked, an agonized metal-on-rock shriek that vibrated through Daniel’s boots. The entire viewing platform dropped six inches, listing precariously toward the churning ocean. Pebbles and shattered lumber clattered down into the surf.

Noah was barely conscious, groaning as he struggled to lift his head from the soaked pine planks. Maya was wailing hysterically against Daniel’s chest, her tiny fingers clutching his soaked shirt with desperate, instinctive terror.

Vanessa stood between them and the stairs leading back up to safety. She saw the platform failing. She knew they were seconds away from falling to their deaths, yet she stood completely still, blocking the only escape route like an angel of death.

"Drop the baby, Daniel," she commanded, holding out her free left hand while the knife gleamed in her right. "Give me Maya, and I’ll let you drag your pathetic son up the stairs. Keep her, and all three of you go into the rocks."

Daniel looked at her through the driving rain. For the first time since the night he smelled smoke in his Westchester hallway, the fear inside him evaporated entirely. It was replaced by a cold, lethal calm.

"You never cared about Maya," Daniel said, his voice cutting through the storm with absolute clarity. "You don't want a daughter, Vanessa. You want Clara’s life. You wanted her name, her money, her family. But you will never, ever be Clara."

Vanessa’s face twisted into an expression of grotesque rage. "I AM BETTER THAN CLARA! Clara was weak! Clara was a coward who hid in her locked studio while I ran her empire!"

"Clara died protecting her children from you," Daniel took half a step forward, his boot finding purchase on the remaining solid anchor beam. "And that is why you will always be nothing."

Vanessa screamed and lunged forward, the knife aimed straight for Daniel’s heart.

Daniel didn't dodge backward toward the falling platform. He drove himself forward into the attack.

He didn't use a weapon. He used the one thing Vanessa never anticipated: his own body as a blunt instrument. Tucking Maya tightly against his ribcage with his left arm, Daniel slammed his right shoulder straight into Vanessa’s chest, driving all his weight and momentum into her midsection.

The collision carried them both off the failing platform and onto the solid stone steps embedded in the cliff face.

The knife scraped across Daniel’s shoulder, tearing through his jacket and cutting a deep red furrow into his flesh, but Daniel didn't stop. He pinned Vanessa against the jagged limestone wall, his forearm crushing her windpipe with immovable, bone-crushing pressure.

Behind them, with a deafening roar that shook the cliffside, the viewing platform sheared completely off its mounts, plunging into the black, boiling surf seventy feet below.
