Chapter 8 - The Mask Shattered

Silence descended over the lawn, broken only by the crackle of the burning mansion and the steady hiss of steam from the crushed car.

Daniel pushed himself up from the mud. His clothes were shredded, his body screaming in agony from cracked ribs and bruised muscles, but his feet carried him forward with relentless, unstoppable purpose.

He walked up to the wrecked Porsche.

The driver’s side door was jammed shut. Daniel gripped the crumpled metal frame of the window and wrenched it open with a metallic groan.

Vanessa was coughing weakly, pinned behind the deflated white airbag. Her designer dress was soaked in coolant and windshield washer fluid. Her forehead was bleeding heavily from a deep gash where she had struck the steering column.

When she saw Daniel standing outside the window, looking down at her through the rain like an avenging angel, true, unadulterated terror flooded her eyes.

“Daniel…” she wept, her voice high and pathetic, all her calculated arrogance completely dissolved. “Daniel, help me… please! I’m trapped! My legs are pinned!”

Daniel reached through the window. He didn't choke her. He didn't strike her.

He calmly reached past her bleeding face, unbuckled her seatbelt, and pulled the designer leather handbag sitting on the passenger seat out through the window. Inside it, next to her gold compact and passport, were three vials of clear liquid labeled *Potassium Chloride*, alongside two one-way first-class tickets to Zurich departing in four hours.

Daniel tossed the bag onto the wet gravel.

“You told me Clara died peacefully in her sleep,” Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly quiet against the rain. “You held my hand at her funeral. You tucked my children into bed while her body was being lowered into the earth.”

“Daniel, I loved you!” she sobbed hysterically, clawing at his sleeve with bloody, manicured nails. “She was holding you back! She was weak! I did it for us! We can still fix this… tell the police it was Julian! Julian went crazy! I’ll give you everything, Daniel, please don't leave me here!”

Daniel pulled his arm away from her grasp as if she were a venomous snake.

“You’re going to spend the rest of your life in a concrete cage, Vanessa,” Daniel said, stepping back from the crumpled car. “And every single day, you will remember that my children survived you.”
