Chapter 16 - The Face in the Flashlight

The gunshots sounded like whip cracks above the roar of the sea. Julian Vance jerked backward, his chest taking two direct impacts. The gun flew from his grip, tumbling into the abyss, and his heavy frame collapsed against the wooden railing. With a horrifying groaning snap, the rotting cedar gave way.
Julian plunged into the darkness, his body striking the jagged rocks sixty feet below before being instantly swallowed by the foaming, violent tide.
Vanessa shrieked—not in grief, but in pure, uncontrollable fury. She dropped the spent flare gun and pulled a long, bone-handled hunting knife from beneath her trench coat. The red flare hissed in the damp gravel at the top of the stairs, bathing her features in blood-colored light.
"You took everything from me!" she screamed, lunging down the wooden steps with the speed of an attacking viper.
Daniel had no time to aim. He threw his weight backward, turning his body to protect Maya and Noah as Vanessa crashed into him. The impact broke Daniel’s footing on the slick cedar planks.
They fell together down five steps onto a small intermediate viewing platform cantilevered over the empty ocean air. Daniel hit the decking hard, his bandaged ribs screaming in agony as the breath was driven from his lungs. The Glock clattered away, sliding through the railing slats and vanishing into the black surf.
"Noah! Stay back!" Daniel wheezed, rolling onto his back while keeping his left arm wrapped like an iron vise around Maya.
Vanessa was on top of him instantly, her knee driving into his bruised sternum, the blade descending toward his throat. Her eyes were wide, dilated, completely consumed by madness.
"She’s mine, Daniel! She belongs to me!"
Before the blade could pierce Daniel’s throat, a heavy piece of drift oak slammed across the side of Vanessa’s head.
Noah stood there in the rain, holding a jagged chunk of broken banister with both hands, his teeth bared, tears streaming down his mud-streaked cheeks. "Get away from my dad! Get away from my sister!"
Vanessa reeled from the blow, blood pouring from her temple, but she didn't fall. She swung her arm, backhanding Noah across the face with enough force to knock the eight-year-old off his feet. Noah hit the deck hard, his head bouncing against the wooden support post, his body going limp.
"NOAH!" Daniel roared.
The primal fury that erupted in Daniel’s chest shattered every lingering ounce of pain and exhaustion. With his free right fist, Daniel struck Vanessa straight in the jaw, the bone fracturing beneath his knuckles. He shoved her off him, rolling to his feet, shielding both children behind him on the narrow wooden platform.
Vanessa wiped the blood from her mouth with the back of her leather sleeve. She was swaying, the sea wind tearing her coat open, but her grip on the hunting knife never slipped.
"You can't save them both, Daniel," she whispered, her voice bubbling with hysterical amusement. She pointed the knife behind him.
Daniel glanced over his shoulder. The wooden platform was pulling away from the cliff face. Julian’s weight when the rail broke had dislodged the anchor bolts from the limestone. The entire structure was tilting downward, inch by inch, groaning under the strain of their collective weight.
