Chapter 13 - The Poisoned Gala

The room spun violently. Julian caught Elena just as her knees buckled, catching her waist before she hit the floor. The letter slipped from his fingers, fluttering face-down onto the nursery rug.

"Julian... tell me this is a lie," Elena whispered, her voice choking, her eyes wide with unadulterated horror as she stared up into his face. "Tell me this is Victoria's sick, demented game!"

Julian’s face was like carved granite, but his eyes burned with a storm of fury and doubt. He snatched the paper from the ground, his gaze scanning the venomous lines again. "Arthur," he growled through clenched teeth. "We take Alice to Arthur’s compound immediately. He is going to answer every single word written on this paper."

Within forty minutes, the armored convoy rolled past the wrought-iron gates of Arthur Sterling’s fortified upstate estate in Greenwich, Connecticut. Guard dogs patrolled the perimeter; snipers were positioned on the roof.

Inside the grand library, Arthur sat by the roaring fireplace, his face pale and sickly as Julian hurled the photograph and the letter onto the low glass table.

"Look at it!" Julian commanded, his voice shaking the crystal chandelier above them. "Look at it and tell my wife that she is not your daughter!"

Arthur's hands trembled as he picked up the photograph. His eyes lingered on Clara Vance’s smiling face, and a profound, agonizing groan tore from his chest. He closed his eyes, sinking back into the velvet armchair as if the weight of decades had finally broken his spine.

Elena stood clutching Alice against her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Arthur... please. God, please tell me."

Arthur opened his eyes, moist with regret. "Clara Vance was the only woman I ever truly loved," he whispered, his voice cracking. "Fifty years ago, before my father forced me into an arranged marriage with Victoria to merge the Sterling-DeWitt shipping empires. But I swear on everything holy, Elena... Clara was never carrying my child."

"Then why did Victoria write this?!" Julian demanded, slamming his fist onto the mantelpiece.

"Because Victoria was obsessed with Clara," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a terrifying register. "Victoria believed that Clara stole me from her heart. Clara was married to Jonathan Vance. When Clara fell pregnant with you, Elena, Victoria paid a corrupt physician to forge paternity records showing I was the father. She used those forged papers to blackmail Jonathan, driving the Vance family into financial ruin and Clara to the edge of madness."

Arthur looked directly into Elena’s eyes, tears spilling down his wrinkled cheeks. "Clara didn't jump from Blackwood cliff, Elena. Victoria hired men to push her vehicle off the road on the night of the fire. And when Clara miraculously survived the crash and gave birth to you in hiding, Jonathan sacrificed everything to raise you in poverty so Victoria would never find you."

Elena felt the air vanish from her lungs. "My mother... was murdered."

"Yes," Arthur whispered. "And Victoria knew that one day, if Jonathan ever spoke, she would face the electric chair. That’s why she tried to destroy you the moment Julian brought you into our house. Not just because you were poor, Elena. But because your face is the living ghost of the woman she killed."

Before Elena could speak, Julian's phone buzzed violently on the mahogany desk.

It was an unlisted satellite call. Julian picked it up, putting it immediately on speaker.

"Julian, my darling son," Victoria’s voice purred through the speaker, crisp, elegant, and chillingly devoid of remorse. "I see you've consulted your pathetic father. Has he spun his sweet little fairy tale yet?"

"Where are you, Victoria?" Julian’s voice dropped to a lethal, flat whisper.

"Tonight is the annual Metropolitan Heritage Gala at the Plaza," Victoria replied smoothly. "Three hundred of the most powerful people on earth are waiting to toast your appointment as CEO. If you and your little charity case aren't standing under the chandeliers by nine o'clock sharp, the forged Vance paternity dossier goes live to every major news outlet on the globe. Imagine the headline, Julian: *Sterling Heir Marries His Secret Sister; Dynasty Built on Incest.* Even a lie will burn your precious foundation to ash before the truth can put its shoes on."

"You won't make it to the Plaza alive," Julian snarled.

May you like

"I won't have to," Victoria laughed, a sound like broken glass grinding together. "I’m already inside the walls, Julian. And I have someone you might want to see."

The line clicked dead.
