Chapter 17 - The Kidnapping Protocol

The roar of police sirens echoed twenty stories below as flashing blue and red emergency lights washed over the shattered penthouse. NYPD Tactical Units stormed through the broken elevator doors, zip-tying Victoria and dragging her, kicking and screaming obscenities, down the hall in heavy steel shackles.

Julian stood by the broken window, the freezing night wind whipping his tie over his shoulder, his phone pressed hard against his ear.

"What do you mean the federal warrant is already signed?!" Julian roared into the phone. "On whose authority?!"

On the other end of the line, Sterling Global’s chief legal counsel, David Rosen, sounded completely defeated. "Julian... it came from the Deputy Director of the Southern District of New York. A courier delivered a lockbox containing thirty years of offshore transaction receipts bearing your father's and your grandfather's signatures. The Federal Reserve has initiated an emergency freeze on all domestic Sterling Global operating accounts. Even the foundation's accounts are locked pending criminal audit."

"Who was the courier, David?" Julian demanded, his voice trembling with controlled rage. "Who delivered the box?!"

"The signature on the delivery manifest... it was signed under the name 'Damien Cross'."

Julian froze.

Behind him, Arthur dropped his cane onto the floor, the silver handle clattering across the marble. The old man's face turned completely white, his hands trembling violently.

"Arthur?" Elena asked, catching the patriarch before he collapsed. "Who is Damien Cross?"

Arthur looked at Julian, his eyes filled with a terror Elena had never seen before. "Julian's... elder brother."

Silence fell over the room like a suffocating shroud. Julian slowly lowered the phone from his ear, staring at his father as if the man had just spoken in tongues.

"My... what?" Julian asked, his voice barely a whisper.

"Before I married Victoria," Arthur confessed, his voice shaking with thirty years of buried guilt, "she was engaged to a ruthless banking heir named Victor Cross. She gave birth to a boy. When Victor died in an offshore yacht explosion, Victoria gave the child away to an elite boarding academy in Switzerland to hide the pregnancy from my father, Alistair. She erased him from existence so she could marry me and claim the Sterling name."

"Alistair knew," Arthur continued, tears rolling down his cheeks. "He secretly funded the boy’s trust. That boy... Damien... grew up knowing he was discarded like trash while you, Julian, were raised as the golden heir to the world. Damien joined the Department of Justice’s financial crimes division fifteen years ago. He didn't break Victoria out of prison to save her. He used her to get the location of the ledger so he could finally destroy us all."

Elena felt the ground shifting beneath them. "Victoria didn't escape. Damien Cross orchestrated her escape to force this confrontation."

"He doesn't just want our money," Julian realized, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. "He wants to annihilate the entire bloodline."

Suddenly, Marcus ran back into the penthouse, his service weapon drawn, his face streaked with sweat. "Julian! Elena! We have a catastrophic breach at the Greenwich estate!"

Elena’s heart stopped. "Alice?!"

"A DHS tactical strike team hit the estate two minutes ago under a federal protective seizure order signed by Deputy Director Damien Cross!" Marcus screamed over the noise of the wind. "They claimed the child was an asset involved in a criminal flight risk! They disarmed our private guards and took Alice!"
