Chapter 19 - The Bloodline Secret

Midnight struck across New York City.
Outside the Daniel Patrick Moynihan United States Courthouse in Lower Manhattan, over thirty satellite broadcasting trucks crowded the plaza. Hundreds of journalists, cameras rolling, stood behind police barriers under the torrential rain that had suddenly begun to fall.
A black armored Suburban pulled up to the curb.
Julian stepped out into the pouring rain, holding a massive black umbrella over Elena, who stepped onto the pavement wearing a sharp black suit, her head held high against the wind. Arthur stepped out behind them, supported by Marcus.
Flashbulbs illuminated the rain like lightning strikes.
Before Julian could reach the podium set up on the courthouse steps, the heavy bronze doors of the federal building swung open.
A man stepped out into the rain.
He was tall, broad-shouldered, wearing an impeccably tailored charcoal coat over a federal badge. His hair was dark like Julian’s, his jawline nearly identical, but his eyes were Victoria’s—a piercing, cold, calculating blue.
Damien Cross.
Flanked by eight heavily armed federal marshals, Damien walked down the granite steps, a mocking smile on his lips.
"Julian," Damien greeted, his voice rich and dripping with condescending pity. "And little Elena. Have you come to surrender before the indictment unseals?"
Julian stepped forward, meeting his half-brother chest to chest, the rain drumming furiously on the fabric of their coats. "Where is my daughter, Damien?"
"Safe," Damien whispered, leaning in so the microphones couldn't catch his words. "In a secure room where you will never lay eyes on her again. You enjoyed thirty years of our mother’s love, Julian. You enjoyed the Sterling billions while I ate cold gruel in Alpine boarding schools. Did you think you could just sweep the dirt under the rug and play happy family? I am going to strip you of everything. Your wife, your baby, your freedom."
Elena stepped directly between them, her gaze locking onto Damien’s eyes with the force of an oncoming train.
"You think you’re punishing Victoria, don't you?" Elena spoke, her voice clear, amplified by the parabolic microphones of the nearby press. "You think by hurting an infant, you’re finally getting revenge on the mother who abandoned you?"
Damien’s smile faltered, a dark shadow crossing his face. "You know nothing about my life, little girl."
"I know you’re a coward," Elena said, her voice ringing across the silent plaza, carrying straight into the live broadcast feeds of millions of viewers across the globe. "You wear a badge, but you’re just a terrified little boy screaming in an empty Swiss dormitory, begging for a mother who never wanted you!"
"Shut your mouth!" Damien hissed, his hand twitching near his sidearm.
"No, Director Cross," Elena proclaimed, turning directly toward the wall of television cameras. "You abused your federal authority to kidnap a two-month-old infant without a signed judicial warrant! You forged asset-seizure orders to settle an inheritance dispute! And right now, on live international television, we are uploading the encrypted server logs proving that your offshore shell corporation in the Cayman Islands received fifteen million dollars from Victoria Sterling three days ago to facilitate her escape!"
Damien’s eyes widened with genuine shock. "That’s impossible!"
"Marcus pulled the wire transfers from Victoria’s laptop fifteen minutes ago," Julian whispered into Damien’s ear, a cold, ruthless grin spreading across his face. "You didn't catch her, brother. You were working with her. You're not the righteous crusader. You’re just another corrupt criminal in the Sterling sewer."
Reporters erupted into a frenzy, screaming questions at Damien as camera operators pushed forward against the federal marshals.

Damien’s earpiece crackled with panic: *"Director Cross! The Inspector General’s office just issued an immediate suspension of your credentials! Stand down immediately!"*
Damien looked at Julian, his jaw working, a vein throbbing violently against his temple. "You think you won?" Damien whispered, a sinister, terrifying smile returning to his lips. "You think this was about the money?"
