Chapter 2 - The Ambush at the St. Regis

The words seemed to siphon the very oxygen out of the lobby.
*Conservatorship.*
Julian’s mind raced through the labyrinth of corporate law, trust agreements, and corrupt judicial circuits his family had manipulated for decades. Judge Hastings wasn’t just a judge; he was a founding member of the Sterling Foundation’s charitable trust, a man whose entire political career had been funded through Victoria’s shell corporations in Delaware.
"You're out of your mind," Julian snarled, his voice dropping an octave as he shifted Elena completely behind his back, backing toward the mahogany concierge desk. "You forged psychiatric papers? She's seven months pregnant! She hasn't missed a single prenatal appointment!"
"Not according to the psychiatric evaluation submitted this afternoon," Dr. Vance replied smoothly, taking a measured step forward. The four men in medical scrubs fanned out in a synchronized tactical formation, blocking every primary exit leading to the street. "Signed testimonies from three independent nurses confirm that Mrs. Sterling has exhibited severe postpartum psychosis pre-term, including auditory hallucinations and explicit threats to terminate the lineage. For the safety of the fetus, chemical restraint is authorized."
"Lies!" Elena screamed, her voice cracking with pure terror. Her body shook so violently Julian could feel the tremors rattling through his own spine. "Julian, they’re lying! I’ve never seen those nurses in my life! She wants to cut our baby out of me!"
"Sedate her," Victoria commanded from the edge of the debris, wiping a drop of Julian’s blood from her fingernail with a lace handkerchief. Her eyes were hard, flat discs of pure malice. "She is hysterical. If she damages that child, Harrison, your license won't be the only thing that gets revoked."
"Step back, Vance!" Julian shouted, reaching behind him with one hand and snatching a heavy bronze desk lamp from the concierge counter, tearing the cord from the wall outlet with a brutal jerk. "You take one step closer to my wife, and I will cave your skull in!"
The lead orderly, a towering man with cauliflower ears and the thick neck of a former heavyweight fighter, didn't hesitate. He lunged forward, reaching for Elena’s exposed wrist.
Julian didn't hesitate either.
He swung the heavy bronze lamp in a devastating horizontal arc. The solid metal collided with the orderly’s temple with a sickening, hollow *thud*. The man collapsed instantly, his dead weight crashing onto the luggage trolley, sending it careening across the polished floor until it slammed into a floor-to-ceiling mirror, shattering the glass into a thousand spiderweb fractures.
"Security!" Dr. Vance yelled, stepping backward in alarm. "Subdue him!"
The two private Sterling operatives drew collapsible batons from their jackets, the steel clicking into place with mechanical finality. "Sir, please stand down. We do not want to use force against you."
"You work for my father's estate, not her!" Julian roared, blood dripping from his scratched cheek onto his collar. "Stand down, or every single one of you will spend the rest of your lives in a federal penitentiary!"
"Your father is incapacitated, Julian," Victoria sneered, her voice venomous. "I hold the power of attorney. I sign the paychecks. Take the girl!"
The remaining three orderlies and the two armed guards rushed forward simultaneously.
"Run!" Julian yelled to Elena, shoving her toward the service corridor behind the concierge desk. "Get through the kitchen, Elena! Go!"
Elena hesitated for a fraction of a second, her heart screaming at her not to leave him, but the terrifying sight of the four-inch needle in Dr. Vance’s gloved hand drove her primal instincts. She turned, clutching her heavy belly with both hands, and ducked beneath the bronze brass counter, disappearing into the service corridor just as the guards collided with Julian.
The chaos that erupted was brutal and unvarnished.
Julian tackled the nearest guard, driving him into the marble floor with all the weight of his six-foot-two frame. The guard’s baton clattered away, but the second orderly leaped onto Julian’s back, wrapping a thick forearm around his throat in a chokehold. Julian choked, his vision tunneling into gray dots, but he drove his elbow backward with savage force, catching the orderly square in the solar plexus. The man wheezed, releasing his grip.
Julian rolled, kicked the guard in the knee with a sickening pop, and scrambled to his feet.
Across the lobby, Victoria was screaming at Dr. Vance. "After her! If she reaches the street and gets to the press, we are finished! Catch her!"
Dr. Vance and the final orderly bolted toward the service door.
"NO!" Julian lunged forward, grabbing Dr. Vance by the scruff of his expensive wool coat and violently slamming the physician against a marble pillar. The glass syringe slipped from Vance’s hand, shattering against the stone floor, the clear, lethal sedative pooling into the cracks.
Julian leaned in close, his bloody face inches from the terrified doctor’s eyes. "Tell my mother... that if Elena loses this baby, there is nowhere on earth she can run where I won't find her."
Julian shoved Vance to the floor, spun on his heel, and sprinted into the service hallway, slamming the heavy fire-rated steel door behind him and dropping the security latch into place.
The hallway was dimly lit, reeking of industrial bleach, roasting garlic, and panic. Julian sprinted down the narrow corridor, following the trail of scuffed footprints on the linoleum. Up ahead, through the double swinging doors of the banquet kitchen, he could hear the sound of pots crashing and the frantic cries of the line cooks.
He burst into the kitchen. White steam plumed from the industrial dishwashers; line cooks in white aprons stood frozen with carving knives and spatulas raised in mid-air.
At the far end of the stainless-steel prep tables, Elena was struggling with the emergency exit push-bar. Her belly was pressed against the metal, her hands shaking so violently she couldn't disengage the industrial lock.
"Elena!" Julian called out.
She turned, her eyes wide with terror, gasping for breath, before recognizing him. "Julian! It’s locked—it’s locked with a security keycard!"
Behind Julian, the heavy steel service doors at the entrance began to shudder violently. The security guards were ramming it from the lobby side. The frame groaned.
Julian sprinted down the line of prep tables, grabbing a massive, carbon-steel meat cleaver from a magnetic rack. He reached Elena, stepped past her, and wedged the thick blade directly into the gap between the door frame and the electromagnetic lock. With a roar of exertion, Julian threw his entire body weight into the lever.
*SNAP.*
The magnetic housing ruptured in a shower of sparks. Julian shoved the heavy metal door outward. Cold, autumn Manhattan air slammed into their faces like a slap of ice water.
They were in the loading dock alley. Rain was beginning to fall, slicking the asphalt and reflecting the neon glow of 5th Avenue in murky puddles.
"Julian... my stomach..." Elena suddenly whimpered, doubling over and catching herself against the brick wall of the alley. Her face was gray, a spasm of blinding agony twisting her features. "Julian... the stress... I’m having contractions."
Julian’s heart stopped.
Behind them, the kitchen doors burst open. The shouts of security guards echoed down the concrete loading dock.
"Over here! They’re in the alley!"

Julian looked down at his wife, saw the undeniable terror and physical trauma in her eyes, and made the only decision that mattered. He scooped her into his arms, ignoring the screaming pain in his scratched face and bruised ribs, and ran out into the pouring rain.
