Chapter 20 - The Whispers in the Dark

The torrential rain fell like sheets of glass against the floodlit granite plaza. The screaming voices of the media corps had turned into a chaotic roar as the federal marshals flanking Damien Cross looked at each other with sudden, agonizing hesitation, their hands dropping slowly from their holsters.

"Director Cross, step away from the podium!" a senior marshal shouted, reaching for his own badge as the reality of the live television broadcast sank in. "We have orders from the Deputy Attorney General to escort you inside!"

Damien ignored the marshal completely. His cold blue eyes remained locked onto Julian, unblinking, horrifyingly calm amid the storm.

"You really are your father's son, Julian," Damien said softly, the microphone picking up every chilling cadence of his voice. "So predictable. So wrapped up in your righteous indignation. You thought you outplayed me with financial records and public outrage."

Julian reached out, his hand clamping like a vise onto Damien’s lapel, pulling the man an inch from his face. "Where is Alice, Damien? Say the word, or I swear to God, not even that badge will save you from what I do next."

Elena stood beside Julian, her heart hammering against her ribs, her breath catching in her throat. Something was wrong. Terribly wrong. Damien wasn't panicking. He wasn't acting like a man who had just been exposed on national television.

He looked like a man who had already set the fuse.

"Julian..." Elena whispered, a sudden, ice-cold intuition paralyzing her spine. "Look at him. He wants this."

Damien let out a low, breathless laugh that was drowned out by the thunder cracking across the Manhattan skyline. He reached into his overcoat pocket with excruciating slowness, making sure the federal snipers on the roof saw his open fingers.

He didn't pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a small, vintage brass baby rattle—the exact rattle that had belonged to Clara Vance, the one Elena had placed in Alice’s crib that very morning.

Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth, tears instantly washing down her cheeks with the rain. "Where did you get that?!"

"She’s not at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Julian," Damien whispered, leaning toward Julian's ear, his breath hot and rancid against the rain. "I never took her to a federal facility. Why would I trust the government with my most valuable leverage?"

Julian’s grip on Damien’s coat tightened until the fabric tore. "WHERE IS SHE?!"

"She's with someone who has been waiting thirty years to complete the circle," Damien whispered, his eyes flashing with absolute, terrifying madness. "She’s with Victoria."

Elena screamed, lunging forward, but Marcus caught her arms, holding her back as chaos erupted on the steps.

"Victoria is in NYPD custody!" Julian yelled, shaking Damien violently. "I watched them shackle her!"

Damien smirked, blood dripping from his lip where Julian’s knuckle had grazed him. "Check the precinct transport log, brother. The van that left the Plaza never arrived at Central Booking. The drivers were mine. By now, our dear mother has already crossed the state line. She has the baby. She has a private jet waiting at a remote airstrip in upstate New York."

Julian’s phone in his breast pocket began to vibrate with violent, rhythmic intensity.

With trembling, soaked fingers, Julian pulled out the phone.

The screen displayed a FaceTime call from an encrypted satellite number.

Julian answered, flipping the screen toward Elena.

Through the rain and static on the screen, the dimly lit cabin of a private aircraft appeared. The engines were already whining in the background, preparing for takeoff.

Sitting in a cream leather armchair was Victoria Sterling. Her hair was disheveled, her face bruised, but in her arms, wrapped tightly in a pink cashmere blanket, was little Alice—fast asleep, unaware of the nightmare unfolding around her.

Victoria looked directly into the camera lens, her eyes completely devoid of human warmth.

"Hello, Julian. Hello, Elena," Victoria spoke, her voice sending a paralyzing chill through the pouring rain. "You took my name. You took my home. You took my dignity. Now, I take your future."

"Victoria! Put her down!" Elena screamed into the screen, dropping to her knees on the soaked granite, begging with every shred of her soul. "Please! Take me! Kill me! Just leave my baby alone!"

Victoria tilted her head, a cold, reptilian smile curving her lips as she leaned down and whispered something into the sleeping infant's ear.

Then, she looked back at the camera.

"You have two hours to reach the old Blackwood lighthouse on Montauk Point, Julian," Victoria whispered. "Come alone. No police. No federal agents. Just you and Clara’s little bastard. If I see a single flashing light, if I hear a single helicopter rotor... the baby goes over the cliffs, just like her grandmother."

The screen flickered.

Before the connection went dead, a sudden, thunderous bang echoed through the speakers on the phone—the unmistakable sound of a cabin door being breached, followed by a man’s frantic shout in the background of Victoria's jet:

*"Put the gun down! She's not who you think she is!"*

The call severed into pitch-black static.

Julian stood frozen in the pouring rain, staring at the dead screen as thunder shook the earth beneath Fifth Avenue. Elena looked up at him from her knees, her eyes wide with terror and confusion.

Who was on that plane? And what secret was Victoria still hiding that was worth dying for?
