Chapter 18 - Ashes on Fifth Avenue

"NO!"
Elena’s scream shattered the night. She grabbed Marcus by the tactical vest, her eyes wild, her fingernails tearing through the fabric. "WHERE DID THEY TAKE HER?! WHERE IS MY BABY?!"
"A federal holding facility at the Brooklyn Navy Yard," Marcus gasped, his voice cracking with shame. "Cross utilized a special homeland security designation. No local judge can override it for seventy-two hours. By the time we get an injunction, Damien Cross can have Alice transferred into an anonymous foster network under classified seal!"
Julian grabbed Elena by the shoulders, pulling her against his chest as her body shook with violent, uncontrollable sobs. He kissed her forehead, his eyes burning with an unholy, terrifying fire.
"Listen to me, Elena," Julian whispered, his voice deadly, cold, and razor-sharp. "Look at me!"
Elena looked up into his dark eyes, tears streaming down her pale cheeks.
"They took our daughter," Julian said, each word carved from steel. "They took our name. They took our fortune. But they made one fatal mistake. They left us alive."
Julian turned to Marcus. "Marcus, unlock the Black Protocol."
Marcus’s eyes widened in shock. "Julian... the Black Protocol hasn't been touched since your grandfather died. If we activate those resources, there is no coming back. It’s total war against the federal apparatus."
"I don't give a damn about the federal apparatus," Julian snarled. "Call every mercenary, every black-budget security operative on the private payroll who isn't on the books. Get the heavy artillery from the Long Island hangar. We are taking my daughter back tonight, or Brooklyn burns to the ground."
"Wait," Elena said, wiping the tears from her face, her breathing slowing as an icy resolve replaced her panic. "No. If you attack a federal facility with private mercenaries, Julian, they will paint you as a domestic terrorist. Alice will be locked away in federal witness protection forever, and you will spend the rest of your life in ADX Florence."
"Then what do you propose, Elena?!" Julian yelled, the agonizing frustration finally breaking through his armor. "We sit here and wait three days while a madman erases our child?!"
"No," Elena said, stepping toward the shattered window, looking out over the glowing grid of Manhattan. "Damien Cross used the law to steal our daughter. He used the media to freeze our accounts. We fight him on his own battlefield. Marcus—call every television network in the United States. Call CNN, call Fox, call the BBC. Tell them Julian Sterling and Elena Vance are holding a live, unscripted press conference on the steps of the Department of Justice building in forty-five minutes. And Arthur..."
Elena turned to the broken patriarch. "You are going to sit in front of those cameras and confess everything. The money laundering, the betrayal, and the fact that a corrupt federal director is weaponizing the United States government to enact a personal vendetta against an innocent newborn child."

Arthur looked at Elena, seeing in her the terrifying strength that Clara Vance had always possessed. He gripped his cane, his spine straightening for the first time in twenty years.
"I will tell them every single sin, Elena," Arthur said firmly. "I will sign my own confession if it brings my granddaughter home."
