Chapter 1 - The Edge of Eternity

The splintering pine shrieked like bone giving way under relentless weight. Sub-zero mountain air rushed through Emily’s cracked lips, tasting of frost and copper. Below them, wrapped in churning mist, lay Devil’s Cauldron—a five-hundred-foot abyss of jagged granite boulders and frozen river ice.

Daniel’s blood was warm against Emily’s cheek.

"Don't move, Em," he whispered, the sound gurgling deep in his chest. His muscular arms, clad in torn, snow-soaked leather, were locked around her trembling torso like vice grips. His boots dug frantically into the icy verge, kicking loose shale and hard-packed snow that tumbled into the void. "Look at me. Look only at me. Do not look down."

"Daniel... the baby... the fence is snapping!" Emily sobbed, clutching her seven-month belly beneath the heavy wool coat. Her fingers clawed into her older brother’s shoulders. The wheelchair that had carried her up the scenic peak was already gone, swallowed by the fog seconds ago; they hadn’t even heard it hit the bottom.

Behind them, atop the asphalt curve where the luxury SUV was parked, stood Victoria Sterling.

The matriarch of the Sterling Dynasty looked like a marble statue draped in an eight-thousand-dollar cashmere cloak. Her platinum hair was perfectly shielded under a sable hood. She did not scream. She did not dial emergency services. Instead, she adjusted her diamond-encrusted gloves with deliberate, sickening calm. A faint, venomous smirk curled her crimson lips. In Victoria’s cold eyes, Emily was already dead. The unborn child—the sole legitimate heir to the Sterling shipping billions—was erased. Julian, Victoria’s weak-willed son, would belong completely to his mother once more.

*Crrrack.*

The second post of the guardrail sheared off.

"Em," Daniel grunted, his face pale as chalk, veins bulging along his neck. Blood seeped from behind his hairline where his head had slammed against the timber. "When I shove you forward, you roll left. Toward the road. You do not look back for me."

"No! Daniel, no! You'll fall!"

"You carry our family's future, Emily! You survive!" Daniel roared.

With a surge of superhuman adrenaline fueled by pure fraternal love, Daniel twisted his entire body. He planted his battered spine against the collapsing beam, using his own body as a springboard. With both hands, he launched Emily up and over the ridge, away from the yawning precipice.

Emily landed hard in the soft drift three feet onto solid shoulder ground, gasping for breath, curling instinctively into a fetal ball around her stomach.

The moment she cleared the edge, the remaining rail exploded into toothpicks.

"DANIEL!" Emily’s shriek echoed through the frozen valleys.

Daniel slid backward into the white fog. For one horrifying heartbeat, his frostbitten fingers caught the edge of the granite ledge. His eyes found Emily’s through the swirling flurry—not filled with fear, but with an ironclad promise. *Survive.*

Then, Victoria walked forward, her designer boots crunching rhythmically in the powder. She stopped right above Daniel’s clinging fingers.

She leaned down, her perfume—cloying jasmine and bitter almond—suffocating the crisp air. She raised her spiked heel directly over Daniel’s shattered knuckles.

"A heroic effort, boy," Victoria murmured, her voice dripping with aristocrat malice. "Pity peasants never learn their place."

"Stop! Victoria, please!" Emily screamed, dragging herself forward on her knees through the snow, tears freezing instantly to her eyelashes. "I'll give up everything! I'll sign the divorce papers! I'll sign away the trust! Just save my brother!"

Victoria didn't even glance at her. With cold precision, she brought her heel down onto Daniel’s fingers, grinding bone into frozen stone.

A grunt of agony tore from Daniel's throat. His grip slipped.

He plummeted silently into the white abyss.

Victoria turned slowly, looking down at the weeping, pregnant girl crawling in the snow. The silence of the mountain settled like a shroud. Victoria drew a platinum phone from her pocket and hit speed dial, instantly shifting her tone into hysterical, breathless weeping.
