Chapter 25 - The Fall of the Sterling Heir

They sprinted through the devastated corridors of the estate, the emergency klaxons wailing overhead in an ear-splitting rhythm of red flashing lights. The air smelled of burnt ozone and sulfur as the initial timer sequences began firing their localized primer charges along the foundation.
Chunks of plaster and heavy oak beams rained down from the ceiling.
Daniel led the way, assault rifle slung across his chest, clearing shattered debris with his combat knife and brute force. Helena brought up the rear, shotgun ready, constantly scanning the trembling shadows. Julian carried Emily when her legs gave out, his muscles burning with exhaustion, fueled entirely by sheer terror and love.
`02:30... 02:29...`
They burst through the heavy steel emergency doors leading to the external cliffside catwalk.
The elements hit them like a physical blow. The wind shrieked at eighty miles per hour, throwing sharp pellets of hail that sliced into their exposed skin. Below them, suspended over the bottomless chasm, was an ancient, rusted steel cable car attached to a thick braided steel line that vanished into the white tempest toward the lower mountain outpost.
"The control booth!" Daniel yelled over the roar of the storm, pointing toward a small concrete bunker perched on the edge of the catwalk. "The manual override is inside! Someone has to stay behind and release the mechanical drum brake, or the car won't drop!"
Julian froze, turning to look at Daniel. "What did you say?"
"The emergency brake is rusted shut from thirty years of frost!" Daniel shouted, his face grim. "The automatic release won't work without a pneumatic charge. Someone has to manually crank the hydraulic lever inside the booth to break the ice seal!"
"No," Emily gasped, her voice choked with horror as she realized what Daniel meant. "No, Daniel! You can't stay! We find another way!"
"There is no other way, Emily!" Daniel said, grabbing her shoulders, his eyes fierce and bright with unconditional devotion. "In two minutes, this entire platform is going to slide into the gorge! You and Julian get in that car! Helena, keep them safe!"
"Danny..." Helena’s voice broke for the first time. The ruthless, scarred warrior woman stared at her son, her eyes wide with agonizing heartbreak. "Not you. Not after twenty-two years. I just got you back."
"You taught me to protect our family, Mom," Daniel said softly, placing his hand over hers. "Eleanor saved your life. You saved mine. Now it’s my turn to save Eleanor’s daughter."
A massive explosion shook the ground beneath them.
The east wing of the Sterling manor collapsed in a terrifying roar of fire and shattering masonry, sending a shockwave that rattled the metal catwalk violently.
`01:15... 01:14...`
"Go! NOW!" Daniel roared, pushing Julian and Emily toward the open door of the steel tram car.
Helena looked at her son for one final, devastating second, kissed his forehead with fierce pride, and stepped into the car behind Julian and Emily, pulling the heavy steel door shut and locking the deadbolts.

Through the reinforced glass of the tram car, Emily pressed her hand against the pane, weeping hysterically. "Daniel! Please!"
Daniel gave her a crisp, sharp military salute through the blizzard. Then, he turned and sprinted toward the control booth, throwing his shoulder against the frozen metal door and disappearing inside.
