Chapter 26 - The Poison in the Veins

Inside the cramped, ice-encrusted control booth, Daniel’s breath billowed in thick white clouds. The console was dead, severed from main power, but the heavy mechanical lever—a four-foot bar of forged iron connected to the hydraulic brake system—stood stubbornly locked in the "ENGAGED" position, encased in a thick shell of solid rime ice.

`00:45... 00:44...`

Daniel gripped his combat knife and violently chipped away at the frozen casing, ice splinters flying into his face. He grabbed the iron bar with both hands, planting his combat boots against the concrete wall, and pulled with every ounce of strength in his body.

The metal groaned, protesting under the agonizing strain. Veins bulged in Daniel’s neck, his muscles screaming in protest.

"Move, you bastard!" he roared into the empty booth.

With a deafening *CRACK*, the ice shattered, and the hydraulic lever snapped backward.

Outside, the heavy drum brakes on the overhead cable car disengaged with a shower of orange sparks. The tram car lurched violently, dropped ten feet into the fog, and began accelerating down the steep steel cable, gliding away from the doomed summit.

Inside the falling tram car, Emily watched the mountain peak recede into the swirling whiteout. "He did it... he got us loose..."

Julian held her tightly against his chest, shielding her from the violent vibrations of the speeding carriage. "He’s a Vance. He’s the toughest man I've ever known."

Helena stood by the rear observation window, her eyes fixed on the control booth shrinking into the distance. A silent tear traced the jagged scar on her cheek, freezing before it reached her jawline.

Suddenly, the world turned white.

A subterranean detonation of cataclysmic proportions erupted along the spinal ridge of the mountain. Five thousand tons of military-grade explosives, planted in the structural bedrock of the Sterling estate, detonated simultaneously.

The entire crest of the mountain disintegrated into a blinding fireball that illuminated the storm clouds for twenty miles. The grand Sterling manor—the fortress of blood, lies, and generational cruelty—vanished in a towering plume of black smoke, shattered stone, and roaring fire.

The shockwave hit the suspended cable car like a freight train.

The car swung violently in a ninety-degree arc, the overhead rollers screeching in metal-on-metal agony against the strained cable. Emily screamed as she was thrown against the padded bench, Julian wrapping his entire body over hers as glass panels shattered and loose equipment flew across the cabin.

"Hold on!" Helena screamed, grabbing the emergency handrail as the tram swayed wildly above a drop that guaranteed instant death.

Then, a sickening sound reverberated through the steel cable: *PING. PING. SNAP.*

The main support anchor at the top of the mountain had been sheared by the blast.

The thousands of feet of high-tension braided steel holding them in the sky began to unravel, whipping through the storm like a colossal metal serpent, sending the tram car into a terrifying, uncontrolled freefall down the mountain slope.
