Chapter 2 - The Lioness in Chains

The glare of fluorescent bulbs burned Emily’s retinas. The rhythmic, sterile hiss of a ventilator and the persistent beep of vitals monitors filled the high-security ICU room at St. Jude’s Private Hospital.
"Fetal heart rate is stable at one-forty. Cervical length is holding, but the trauma induced mild contractions. We have her on magnesium sulfate."
"Keep her sedated," a smooth, authoritative female voice cut through the medical jargon. Victoria Sterling stood at the foot of the bed, chatting quietly with the chief of surgery. "My poor daughter-in-law is completely hysterical. She's suffering from acute post-traumatic psychosis. If she speaks, doctor, it is merely the shock speaking."
Emily opened her eyes. The drug made her limbs feel like lead, but her mind was incandescent with white-hot fury.
"Victoria..." Emily rasped through cracked lips.
The doctor bowed politely and stepped out, leaving the room heavy with sudden, suffocating silence.
Victoria walked over to the side of the bed, her expression instantly dropping its veil of sorrow. She pulled a sterile chair forward, sat down, and crossed her slender legs. She smoothed her immaculate pencil skirt with two gloved fingers.
"You should be dead, Emily," Victoria said conversationally, as though remarking on unseasonable weather. "The drop was five hundred feet. How terribly inconvenient that your foolish brother managed to fling you like a sack of potatoes onto the gravel."
"Where is Daniel?" Emily’s heart monitor spiked. *Beep-beep-beep-beep.* "Where is my brother, you monster?!"
"Search and Rescue found his body three miles downriver," Victoria lied without flinching, watching Emily’s face for the slightest twitch of agony. "Crushed against the ice dam. Pronounced dead on scene. The morgue is preparing the closed casket now."
The room spun. A suffocating void opened inside Emily’s chest. Daniel. Her protector. Her anchor since their parents died in the mill explosion ten years ago. Gone. Murdered by the woman sitting three feet away.
"You pushed me," Emily whispered, every syllable soaked in venom. "You killed him. And Julian... Julian will know. He’s my husband. He loves our baby."
Victoria let out a melodic, mocking laugh that sent chills down Emily’s spine.
"Julian?" Victoria leaned in, her cold breath washing over Emily’s ear. "Julian is outside crying on the shoulder of Senator Vance’s daughter, Charlotte—the woman he *should* have married. Julian believes whatever I tell him, little orphan. He believes you grew depressed, drove your wheelchair toward the ledge in a manic episode, and your brother died trying to undo your stupidity."
Victoria tapped Emily’s IV line with her diamond ring.
"The police report is filed. The coroner is in my payroll. And the moment that bastard child leaves your womb, you will sign full custody to me. Then, you will be transferred to a private asylum in Switzerland. If you breathe a single word of your fairy tale to Julian, or the press... I will ensure your brother's corpse isn't buried. I will have him dumped into an unmarked paupers' incinerator."
Emily clenched the bedsheets until her knuckles turned white. A fire she didn't know she possessed sparked in the ashes of her broken heart.
*Cry later,* her inner voice screamed. *Mourn Daniel later. Right now, become the monster she doesn't think you can be.*
"I understand, Victoria," Emily said softly, letting her eyelids droop, mimicking the posture of a thoroughly broken woman.
Victoria smiled, satisfied. "Good girl. Sleep now. Mommy is in control."
When Victoria left, Emily’s eyes snapped wide open. She looked at the bedside table. Victoria had accidentally dropped a gold-embossed valet ticket from the mountain lodge—the one that recorded the dashcam surveillance codes for the VIP parking deck.
Daniel wasn't dead. Emily felt it in the marrow of her bones. A bond like theirs didn't vanish without an echo.

She reached out her trembling hand, grabbed the ticket, and slid it beneath her tongue.
