Chapter 15 - The Red Dot on the Wall

Back at the mountain sanctuary, night had fallen like an impenetrable shroud of black velvet over the Rockies. A thick, unseasonal blizzard had descended from the Continental Divide, whipping white flakes against the high glass panes of the great room. The wind shrieked through the pines like a chorus of dying men.

Emily paced the floor, clutching Daniella to her chest. Daniel stood by the massive stone fireplace, stripping and cleaning a customized AR-15 with silent, terrifying efficiency. The pieces of the weapon clicked together with metallic snaps that punctuated the howling gale outside.

"Daniel, you're scaring me," Emily said quietly, her voice trembling. "What was in that box? Julian hasn't called back, and you’ve locked down the entire house like we're in a war zone."

Daniel paused, the heavy steel bolt clicking into place. He looked up at his sister. He saw the same gentle, brave eyes that their mother had possessed—eyes that had survived an icy plunge into death and fought their way back to life.

"Our mother didn't die in that house fire, Em," Daniel said, his voice flat, dangerously calm. "Victoria murdered her. She set the fire to cover the crime. She’s been tracking us for thirty years."

Emily’s knees buckled. She staggered backward, collapsing into the deep leather armchair, her breath catching in her throat. "What...? No... that's impossible. Mom... Mom was an accountant at an import firm..."

"An import firm owned by a shell company registered to Victoria Sterling," Daniel said, racking the charging handle of the rifle with a sharp *clack*. "Victoria didn't push you off that cliff in a moment of panic, Emily. She executed a hit that was thirty years in the making. And she isn't done."

Suddenly, the lights in the estate flickered once, twice, and died.

The hum of the heavy backup generator roared to life in the basement, but within five seconds, a loud, metallic explosion ripped through the lower level, followed by the acrid stench of burning fuel and severed copper wires. Complete, suffocating darkness swallowed the house.

Only the red emergency LED strips along the baseboards cast a bloody, eerie glow across the room.

Outside, the first gunshot cracked through the storm.

It was muffled by the wind, but Daniel’s combat-trained ears instantly recognized the sharp report of a suppressed .308 caliber sniper rifle. Then, over the perimeter radio, came the horrifying sound of choking static and the lifeless thud of a falling body.

"They cut the perimeter wires," Daniel whispered, his voice deadly steady. "Security team is down."

Emily gasped, pulling Daniella beneath her wool cardigan, tears welling in her eyes. "Daniel..."

"Get behind the fireplace mantle. Now!" Daniel commanded, leveling his weapon at the French double doors that led to the snow-covered terrace.

As Emily scrambled behind the reinforced brick hearth, a tiny, vibrating crimson dot danced across the wall. It drifted across the family portraits, across the nursery monitor on the side table, and settled squarely onto the middle of Daniel Vance’s chest.
