Chapter 21 - The Ghost With A Shotgun

The howling gale outside whistled through the shattered oak doors like a chorus of screaming banshees, but inside the great hall, the temperature had plummeted to absolute zero.

Daniel stood frozen, his muscular frame locked in paralysis, the muzzle of his tactical rifle sagging toward the polished, snow-dusted marble. His knuckles, usually steady as forged steel, trembled. Standing ten feet in front of him, framed by the swirling blizzard and the ominous glow of emergency floodlights, was a face carved from his deepest nightmares and most painful memories.

"Mom...?" Daniel breathed, his voice cracking like thin ice under heavy boots.

The woman lowering the twelve-gauge combat shotgun did not smile. Her face, etched with the severe lines of a survivor who had crawled out of hell itself, was pale and severe. Silver threads ran through her cropped dark hair, and beneath her right eye was a jagged, faded scar—the signature of a car crash that should have buried her twenty-two years ago in the depths of Lake Geneva.

"Lower the weapon, Danny," Helena Vance said, her voice gravelly, hardened by decades of exile and vengeance. Her cold grey eyes flicked past her son, locking directly onto Victoria Sterling, who was cowering against the glass wall like a trapped venomous spider. "Or don't. Because if you don't blow her head off, I will."

Victoria’s manic laughter choked in her throat. The triumphant gleam in her eyes vanished, replaced by a raw, naked terror that had never once touched her porcelain face. She clawed at the frozen glass behind her, her manicured fingers leaving frantic streaks of red where her nails had split.

"Helena...?" Victoria whimpered, her vocal cords vibrating with sheer horror. "You... you burned. The car caught fire. Richard identified the dental records!"

"Richard identified a corpse your paid assassins dumped in the front seat, you psychopathic bitch," Helena spat, taking a measured, heavy step forward. The combat shotgun remained centered precisely over Victoria’s chest. "You thought you wiped out every trace of the Vance family when you pushed Eleanor over that ledge and set fire to my safe house. But Eleanor wasn't barren. And she wasn't a thief."

Emily stood between the two worlds, her hands pressed tightly over her swollen belly. Her head was spinning, nausea and vertigo threatening to drag her down into unconsciousness. The horrific claim Victoria had just screamed—that Emily was Julian's twin sister, that their marriage and the baby growing inside her was an abomination born of incest—still roared in her ears like a jet engine.

"Is it true?" Emily gasped, her vision blurring, her gaze pleading with Helena. "Tell me it’s a lie! Tell me Julian and I aren't... God, please tell me she lied!"

Julian was on his knees, clutching his skull with both hands, dry-heaving in agony. The thought that he had married his own sister, that he had loved her, that he was the father of a child born from his mother’s poisoned bloodline, was shattering his psyche into jagged shards.

Helena turned her steely gaze toward Emily. The harshness in her expression softened by a fraction, revealing a bottomless reservoir of sorrow.

"She lied to break you, Emily," Helena said clearly, her voice cutting through the tempest like a surgeon's scalpel. "Victoria Sterling has spent forty years mastering one single art: psychological devastation. You are not her daughter. You never were."

Victoria shrieked, an animalistic sound of pure, unbridled malice. "Shut up! Don't listen to her! Emily is my blood! Look at her eyes! Look at the jawline! She has the Sterling curse!"

"Shut your filthy mouth!" Helena roared, racking the shotgun slide back with a deafening metallic clack that silenced the room instantly. "Emily is my sister Eleanor’s biological child, conceived with the only man Eleanor ever loved—Thomas Sterling, Victoria’s deceased brother-in-law. You were never her mother, Victoria. You tried to poison Eleanor because Thomas left his entire private trust to his unborn baby girl—leaving you and your corrupt empire penniless without Julian's inheritance."

Julian lifted his head, his face soaked in cold sweat, his bloodshot eyes searching Helena’s scarred face. "Then... Emily is my..."

"Your first cousin, Julian," Helena said solemnly. "Distantly bound by name, but legally and genetically clean. Victoria stole the hospital records, fabricated the twin narrative twenty years ago as an insurance policy, and kept it in a vault to unleash on the day she lost control of you. She wanted to disgust you so deeply that you would kill yourself and your wife, leaving the entire dynasty in her bloody hands."

Victoria’s face twisted into an unrecognizable mask of demonic rage. Realizing the psychological guillotine had failed to sever Emily's sanity, her hand darted inside her heavy fur coat.

"If I can't break your mind, Emily," Victoria hissed, pulling out a sleek black electronic detonator with a blinking crimson LED, "I'll bury every single one of you under three thousand tons of alpine granite!"
