Chapter 13 - Footsteps in the Salt Mist: The Midnight Intruder

The broadcast showed flames leaping from the barred windows of the Manhattan detention facility. Fire engines clogged the streets below, their sirens wailing through the television speakers like a funeral dirge. A stern-faced reporter spoke over the footage:

*"...sources confirm that an incendiary device was detonated inside the medical transfer ward at approximately three o'clock this morning. Among the three casualties is Elena Vance, the former socialite arrested last week for the alleged conspiracy and fraud against the Vance Tech Empire. Authorities state the bodies are burned beyond immediate recognition, pending dental records..."*

"Burned beyond recognition," Marcus whispered, his knuckles turning white as he clenched his fists. "She didn't die. They extracted her."

Elena hadn't been an opportunist working on a solo whim. She had been backed by an apparatus with the resources to bomb a federal prison facility.

Marcus clicked off the television. The cottage was suffocatingly quiet again.

"Daddy?"

Emma was standing at the edge of the hallway, clutching a small stuffed rabbit that had once belonged to Clara. Her huge green eyes were swimming with tears. "Who was outside? Is the bad lady coming back?"

Marcus sank to one knee, swallowing his rage and terror, presenting an aura of absolute, unshakable calm. "No, sweetie. The bad lady isn't coming back. But we have to go on a trip. Right now."

"Where are we going?"

"We're going to find out the truth about Mommy."

Emma gasped, her little hands gripping the rabbit so tight the seams strained. "Mommy is in heaven. The angels have her."

"Maybe," Marcus said softly, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead. "Or maybe Mommy left us a puzzle that only you and I can solve. Pack your backpack. Just your warmest coat, your sketchpad, and your medicine. Five minutes."

Emma nodded bravely and vanished back into the bedroom.

Marcus moved with ruthless efficiency. He swept the remaining cash from the emergency safe, gathered his encrypted satellite laptop, threw three spare magazines for the Sig Sauer into his duffel, and scooped Clara’s silver locket into his breast pocket.

Suddenly, the lights flickered.

A low hum buzzed through the walls, and then—*snap*. Total, pitch-black darkness.

The breaker box hadn't blown. The exterior power lines had been severed.

Outside, the heavy wooden porch steps creaked under the weight of tactical boots.

Marcus didn't hesitate. He pulled night-vision monocular goggles from his duffel, sliding them over his eyes. The room snapped into eerie phosphorescent green.

*Crunch.*

Glass shattered in the back mudroom.

Marcus darted to Emma’s bedroom. He didn't speak; he clamped a hand gently over her mouth, lifted her light frame with one arm, and shoved the duffel over his shoulder with the other. He didn't head for the front door, nor the back.

He moved straight to the pantry.

Beneath the bottom shelf of the pantry was an old root cellar door, installed in the 1920s during Prohibition for smuggling rum from the cliffs. Marcus pulled the iron ring, revealing a stone shaft with crude wooden ladder rungs descending into the dark.

"Hold on to my neck, Emma. Don't let go, no matter what you hear," Marcus whispered against her ear.

She wrapped her arms around his neck like an iron vice.

Marcus lowered himself into the tunnel just as heavy footsteps kicked open the bedroom door directly above them.

*Phut. Phut. Phut.*

Suppressed gunfire chewed through the mattress where Emma had been sleeping thirty seconds earlier, feathers exploding into the dark.
