Chapter 14 - The Hidden Safety Deposit: Vault 904

The subterranean tunnel was damp, freezing, and smelled of rot and sea salt. It ran eighty yards through the bedrock, emptying out into a hidden natural sea cove beneath the overhanging cliffs.
Marcus emerged into the crashing spray of the high tide, his boots sinking into wet gravel. Anchored twenty yards out in the sheltered cove was a rigid-hulled inflatable Zodiac boat he had secretly contracted from a local fisherman upon arriving in Maine—a contingency plan he prayed he would never need.
He loaded Emma into the boat, pulled the pull-cord of the muffled four-stroke engine on the first yank, and slipped into the Atlantic swell, keeping the craft low beneath the coastal fog line. Behind them on the cliff, the silhouette of the cottage suddenly erupted into an inferno.
A thermite charge. The intruders weren't just looking for them—they were erasing every trace of their existence.
Six hours later, dawn broke over the skyline of Boston.
Marcus had abandoned the Zodiac at a private marina outside Portsmouth, acquired an unregistered SUV through an old private-military contractor friend, and driven straight south into Massachusetts. Emma was asleep in the backseat, exhausted and silent.
Marcus pulled the vehicle into the underground parking garage of the Zurich-Boston Private Trust, a nondescript brutalist limestone building in the Financial District that catered exclusively to ultra-high-net-worth families who demanded untraceable discretion.
Clara had maintained an account here. An account that Marcus had never audited after her funeral, assuming it held only her personal jewelry and maternal family heirlooms.
Now, he knew better.
Leaving Emma in the locked vehicle under the watchful eye of a high-priced private security guard he hired with five thousand dollars in crisp hundreds, Marcus took the private elevator down to the sub-basement.
The vault manager, an austere gentleman with wire-rimmed spectacles named Herr Vane, checked Marcus’s thumbprint and retinal scan against the database. The system beeped green.
"Mr. Vance. You have not visited Box 904 since Mrs. Vance’s passing."
"Open it," Marcus said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion.
Herr Vane turned two keys simultaneously, then stepped back into the shadows to grant the client privacy. Marcus pulled the long steel safety deposit drawer from the wall and carried it to the private viewing cubicle.
He lifted the metal lid.
There were no diamonds inside. No antique necklaces.
Inside were four items:
1. A micro-SD drive encased in resin.
2. A black leather journal belonging to Clara.
3. A frozen dry-ice containment thermos, long since deactivated and empty, labeled with clinical bio-hazard markers.
4. A set of medical charts marked: **CLARA VANCE — EMBRYO EXTRACTION & CRYOPRESERVATION LOG.**
Marcus’s hands shook violently as he opened the leather journal. The handwriting was unmistakable—Clara’s graceful, looping script, dated three weeks before her fatal car crash.
*If Marcus is reading this, it means they succeeded. It means Julian told him I went mad, or that I drowned. Marcus, my love, look into the mirror of our life. Emma wasn't our only miracle. When we underwent IVF seven years ago, they told us only one viable blastocyst survived—our Emma. It was a lie.*
*Julian harvested three more. Grade-A female embryos. And three months ago, I discovered where they went. St. Jude’s isn't a medical research center. It’s an auction house for the global elite.*
May you like
*And Elena... Elena wasn't hired by you, Marcus. She was sent by Julian to harvest Emma’s bone marrow to keep the second child alive.*
