Chapter 20 - The Crib in the Deep: The Final Revelation

They ran through the crumbling, smoke-filled corridors as the walls groaned under the weight of the sea above them. The detonation had breached the outer containment walls; icy saltwater was already pouring through the ceiling cracks, cascading down the stairwells in violent torrents.

They reached the junction leading to the submarine bay.

The heavy blast door was closing, descending like a guillotine.

Marcus shoved Elena through the narrowing gap first, then slid across the wet floor on his side, shielding Sophia with his torso. He cleared the door with inches to spare just as the multi-ton steel slab slammed shut with a thundering *CRASH*, sealing the bunker behind them.

They were back in the cavernous submarine bay.

The *Astraea* was still docked, rocking violently in the rising surge of seawater.

At the end of the boarding ramp stood Dr. Julian Sterling, frantically typing a sequence into a handheld terminal, preparing to release the yacht’s mooring lines and escape alone.

"JULIAN!" Marcus’s roar echoed over the roar of the water.

Julian whirled around, pulling a small silver revolver from his breast pocket.

Marcus didn't give him the chance. He raised his 9mm and fired twice.

The bullets struck Julian in the right shoulder and thigh. The doctor collapsed against the yacht's chrome railing, his weapon clattering into the churning dark water of the bay.

Marcus strode up the ramp, his face an emotionless mask of vengeance. Sophia was quiet against his chest, her face buried in his coat.

Marcus kicked the terminal out of Julian’s bleeding hands, pressing the muzzle of the Sig Sauer directly against the bridge of the doctor’s nose.

"Give me one reason," Marcus whispered, the cold fury in his voice deadlier than any scream. "One reason why I shouldn't feed you to the bay right now."

Julian coughed up dark blood, a sickening, broken laugh escaping his lips. "You... you think you won, Marcus? Look at you. The big, powerful Marcus Vance. Rescuing the baby. A true American hero."

"Shut up," Marcus cocked the hammer.

"You don't understand anything," Julian wheezed, his eyes wild with delirium and madness. "Who do you think... who do you think gave me the authorization codes for the cryo-vault seven years ago?"

Marcus’s finger froze on the trigger. "What did you say?"

"I couldn't harvest Clara’s embryos without two signatures, Marcus," Julian hissed, a horrific, victorious grin spreading across his bloody teeth. "The Vance Trust requires joint spousal authorization... or the signature of the primary matriarch."

Marcus felt the world stop spinning. His breath froze in his throat. "Clara’s mother died twenty years ago."

"Not Clara’s mother, you idiot," Julian whispered, blood bubbling from his mouth. "The founder of the Genesis Circle. The woman who funded this entire facility. The woman whose death in that river was faked so she could undergo complete genomic reconstruction without the SEC, the FBI, or her loving husband asking questions..."

From the dark, shadowed bridge of the yacht above them, the heavy steel door slowly swung open.

The rhythmic clicking of high-heeled boots descended the interior stairs, echoing over the roar of the rising tide.

A tall, elegant woman stepped onto the deck, silhouetted against the emergency amber lights. She held an automatic weapon in her right hand, her long, dark hair blowing in the sea wind.

She stepped into the light.

She had Clara’s face. She had Clara’s eyes.

She looked down at Marcus, then down at the baby in his arms, her lips curling into an icy, unrecognizable smile.

"Hello, Marcus," the woman said, her voice sending a paralyzing shockwave through his entire soul. "Thank you for bringing Sophia back to me. Now, give me my daughter."
