Chapter 15 - The Stolen Embryo: A Living Heir in the Shadows

Marcus felt the breath leave his lungs as if he had been struck by a freight train. The room seemed to tilt at a forty-five-degree angle.
*Dr. Julian Sterling.*
Clara’s personal physician for over a decade. Marcus’s former college roommate at Princeton. The godfather to Emma. The man who had stood beside Marcus at Clara’s funeral, weeping openly, his hand resting reassuringly on Marcus’s shoulder as the bronze casket descended into the earth.
Julian was the one who had introduced Marcus to Elena six months after Clara died.
*"You need to live again, Marcus,"* Julian had whispered over scotch in the Manhattan club. *"Elena is a saint. She runs children's charities in Zurich. She will heal your broken home."*
It had all been a clinical, sociopathic setup.
Marcus devoured the remaining pages of Clara's journal with predatory focus.
*Julian’s private syndicate, 'The Genesis Circle,' creates custom offspring for childless billionaires, oligarchs, and foreign royal families using the genetic material of high-IQ, physically flawless donors without their consent. But our lineage was different. Julian discovered that Emma possesses an exceptionally rare genetic mutation—a natural immunity to progressive Huntington’s chorea, which runs in Julian’s own dying family line.*
*To synthesize the cure, Julian needed a second child carrying the identical maternal marker. He used one of our stolen frozen embryos and implanted it into a black-market surrogate.*
*That baby was born six months ago, Marcus. A little girl. Her name is Sophia. She is living in the St. Jude offshore facility off the coast of Rhode Island.*
*Elena’s fake pregnancy wasn't about public vanity. It was a cover story so she could legally introduce Sophia into our home as 'our newborn daughter,' giving them access to the Vance trust fund while harvesting Emma’s stem cells under the guise of pediatric wellness visits.*
*They are going to kill me, Marcus. Julian knows I have the records. If I don't survive tonight, find our daughter. Find Sophia. Bring our babies home.*
Marcus slammed the journal shut.
The air in the vault cubicle smelled of cold copper. His tears dried instantly, replaced by a volcanic, terrifying rage that burned away every ounce of human hesitation.
Clara hadn't died in an accident. She had fought to the death to protect their unborn child.
Marcus grabbed the micro-SD card, stuffed the journal into his coat, and bolted out of the vault.
As he stepped out into the parking garage, his phone buzzed. It was an encrypted text from an unknown satellite relay:
**LOOK BEHIND YOU.**
Marcus spun around, pulling his weapon in one fluid, deadly arc.
Ten yards away, leaning against a concrete pillar, was a woman dressed in a sleek charcoal overcoat, her hair hidden beneath a wide-brimmed fedora. She held up two gloved hands, demonstrating she was unarmed.
She tilted her hat up.
Marcus’s heart stopped.
It was Elena.
Her face was pale, stripped of the heavy cosmetics and fake smiles of high-society Manhattan. Across her left cheek was a jagged, angry burn scar, freshly stitched.

"Don't shoot, Marcus," she croaked, her voice raspy from smoke inhalation. "Julian tried to incinerate me in that cell. If you want Sophia to survive the next six hours, you and I need to move. Now."
