Chapter 4 - The Prenup's Deadly Deadline

The silence in the study was broken only by the ragged sound of Marcus Vance’s breathing. He stared down at his dead wife’s handwriting, the words blurring through a sudden, blinding haze of rage and grief.

*Vanessa is poisoning me.*

Three years. For three years, Marcus had believed the doctors. He had believed that Clara’s congenital heart murmur had suddenly, tragically worsened. He had held Clara’s hand as her pulse flatlined in the ICU, sobbing until his ribs ached, while Vanessa stood in the corner of the hospital room, dabbing her eyes with a lace handkerchief and murmuring, *"I’ll take care of him, Clara. I promise I’ll take care of everything."*

"Marcus."

Carter Hayes’s sharp voice cut through the fog. The attorney had entered the study, closing the heavy oak door behind him with a definitive click. His face was grim, devoid of the usual corporate polish.

"The state troopers are at the front gate," Carter said quietly. "And Dr. Julian Drake’s black medical van just tried to break through the service exit behind the stables. Security boxed him in. The police have him in cuffs right now."

Marcus slowly closed the silver lockbox, his knuckles turning white as he clutched the cool metal. He looked up at Carter, his slate-gray eyes completely deadened.

"She killed Clara, Carter."

Carter blinked, stunned. "What?"

Marcus held up the silver box. "She didn't just stage a fake pregnancy to get the Vance Trust. She murdered my wife. Clara knew. Clara wrote it down before she died. Vanessa swapped her heart medication."

Carter took half a step back, the legal machinery in his brain visibly grinding to a halt before pivoting toward sheer catastrophe. "My God... Marcus, if this is true—"

"It is true," Marcus said, standing up. His posture was no longer that of a man defeated by scandal. The predatory, ruthless business titan who had crushed international rivals was back, fueled by an incandescent fury. "Where is Vanessa right now?"

"Security has her contained in the library," Carter replied, checking his phone. "She’s demanding to speak with her lawyer. She’s invoking spousal privilege, Marcus. She knows the legal framework inside out. She’s claiming she had a psychiatric break—that the phantom pregnancy was a psychological trauma and that you’re abusing her by detaining her."

Marcus walked to the massive floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the estate’s circular driveway. Below, red and blue emergency lights swept across the manicured boxwood hedges and the marble fountain.

"She has an accomplice," Marcus said coldly. "Julian Drake wouldn't risk his medical license and a twenty-year prison sentence just for a standard surrogacy fee. What was Vanessa promising him?"

Carter pulled a thick manila folder from his leather briefcase. "I had my forensic accountants pull Vanessa’s personal accounts two hours ago, right after the scene in the ballroom. It’s worse than you think, Marcus. The Vance Trust codicil Arthur signed wasn't the only deadline expiring this week."

Marcus turned around. "Explain."

"Your prenuptial agreement," Carter said, opening the folder. "When you married Vanessa fifteen months ago, she signed a standard tier-one prenup. If you divorced within two years with no biological children, she walked away with a flat settlement of five hundred thousand dollars and zero claim to Vance Logistics assets."

"Right. That was standard."

"Yes, but there was an addendum," Carter’s finger traced a clause highlighted in yellow ink. "An addendum added six months ago, right after your father Arthur passed away. An addendum signed with your digital signature."

Marcus’s eyes narrowed into slits. "I never signed an addendum to the prenup."

"Your digital corporate encryption key signed it," Carter said with deadly seriousness. "It states that if Vanessa gives birth to an heir, or if you die while she is pregnant with an heir, seventy percent of Arthur’s liquid offshore trust—roughly two hundred and forty million dollars—transfers instantly to an offshore entity managed jointly by Vanessa Vance and... Dr. Julian Drake’s medical research LLC."

The full scale of the monstrous trap finally revealed itself.

"She wasn't just faking a pregnancy to stay married to me," Marcus whispered, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. "She was faking it to set up my death."

"Marcus, look at the timeline," Carter urged, his voice trembling slightly. "Arthur dies six months ago. She announces her 'pregnancy' five weeks later. She orders an eight-pound silicone belly for the third trimester. The Newark surrogate is scheduled to deliver an undocumented infant on Monday. Once the baby was in this house, registered with a forged birth certificate signed by Drake... what was supposed to happen to you?"

Marcus didn't need to answer. He looked down at the lockbox containing the unlabelled prescription vials Clara had hidden three years ago.

Digitalis powder. A substance that mimicked a massive, unpreventable cardiac arrest.

"Daddy?" Emma’s small voice piped up from the couch. She was watching her father with wide, solemn eyes. "Is Vanessa going to jail forever?"

Marcus walked over, knelt down, and wrapped his arms around his daughter, holding her so tightly he could feel her tiny heartbeat against his chest. "Yes, Emma. She is never, ever going to touch you, or this house, or our lives again. I promise you that on Mommy’s soul."

May you like

Marcus stood up and turned to Carter. "Bring the head of the State Police detachment up here. But leave Vanessa in the library. I want her to sweat. I want her sitting in that room, staring at the empty nursery across the hall, realizing that the house she built out of murder and lies is collapsing right on top of her head."
